Graduate Engineer wins place in USE Program in Spain
ESBI
CRISTINA COLEMAN KENNY, a Graduate Electrical Technician with ESBI’s High Voltage team, was recently selected by DIT Street Kevin along with nine other DIT students to represent Ireland at the USE Program (University and Students for Energy Efficiency) held in Valencia, Spain.
The aim of the two-week USE Program is to create knowledge of energy efficiency that can be shared between all colleges and universities participating in the program and to promote an understanding of EU policy. It is designed to enhance knowledge, skills, promote communication and create constant interaction between EU states.
During the event, the students from DIT presented their findings on the Kevin Street Building, highlighting areas of concern regarding thermal heat loss, energy waste due to inefficient systems and making recommendations on how to reduce energy usage.
Cristina then joined an international project team which looked at the energy efficiency of the IH A, Engineering College of Aarthus, Denmark.
Looking back on the success of the two-week program, Cristina said “it was an excellent opportunity to learn new ways of improving energy efficiency in buildings and it was great to hear different views from across the EU and share their ideas”.
Lough Ree Power supports Community Games Team
LANESBORO TOWN, home of Lough Ree Power, is an annual participant in Community Games activities. Earlier this year, as the town’s committee tried to revitalise interest and involvement in Lanesboro Community Games, new gear was required for children representing Lanesboro at county events.
The local businesses were asked for sponsorship and ESB Lough Ree Power was happy to make a donation. The new tops were sourced at a very competitive rate from a Longford-based provider, going the sustainable route and supporting local jobs.
Lanesboro went on to have a very successful year in Community Games with more than 200 children taking part in the events, including art, handwriting, chess, soccer, football, futsal (five-a-side soccer), tag rugby, quiz, as well as swimming and athletics track and field events, with many to go on and represent Longford County in the Leinster and the national competitions. The Longford County Championships for Track and Field events was the first occasion at which the new gear was launched with more than 40 children from Lanesboro taking part. All of the children were delighted with the new tops and it gave them great identity in representing their parish.
These will be proudly used for many years to come!

Generation Operations
THE BOARD OF ESB held its monthly meeting in Ardnacrusha on Wednesday July 20th.
Staff and management in Ardnacrusha were delighted that the station was chosen to host the meeting and they all made every effort to ensure that it turned out to be a successful and enjoyable occasion.
The Chairman, Chief Executive and board members also visited Parteen Weir in the morning. There, they reviewed the weir structure and equipment, the new access bridge and the ongoing major refurbishment works on a spillway gate. They also visited ESB Fisheries hatchery at Parteen Weir where the company’s work in relation to salmon conservation was explained by fisheries staff. The board members then travelled to Ardnacrusha where they inspected the dam structure and power station.
Hydro Manager Senan Colleran, accompanied by local managers Kenneth Matthews and Tom Hayes, gave a presentation on Ardnacrusha and the Shannon Scheme. The presentation covered the history of the Shannon Scheme and its contribution to the development of the state from 1929 onwards, ESB’s role in the management of water levels in Ireland’s largest river and the station’s contribution to ESB’s generating portfolio at present.
