BILLY BYRNE, ESB Senior Executive Coach, opened the first of a series of Coaching Supervision workshops on September 20th in ESB Head Office. Billy invited the coaches present and learn from one another and to strive to continuously develop as coaches. Monica Ross, Xenergie, will provide a coaching supervision service for the panel of internal ESB coaches. Supervision for coaches is considered to be best practice within the coaching community. It provides an opportunity for coaches to develop their coaching skills through sharing learning and experience without compromising on client confidentiality. In addition the Supervisor, themselves an experienced coach, can provide further development through introducing other models, techniques etc. which aids the CPD of the coach.

All coaches will have the opportunity to attend these workshops over the coming months.

For information on coaching in ESB, please visit the ESB Coaching page on ESBNet or the coaching and mentoring coordinator within your business unit.

Dundalk wins 2011 ESB GAA 7’s

A GUTSY PHYSICAL encounter with fast-moving ball-carriers was a feature of this year’s 7’s final between Dundalk and competition newcomers NIE Operations.

This was not a match for the faint hearted as the ‘hits’ were crunching and frequent, but fair. Dundalk settled early and, assisted by the wind, they had an impressive half time lead of 2-6 to NIE’s 1-4. Derek Mulligan at Number 10, the game’s Man-of-the-Match award winner, caused all sorts of problems for the NIE defence and finished the game with a tally of 2-2. He was ably assisted by Captain Bryan McGuinness, former Louth Senior Alan Page, Christy Caroon and Goalkeeper John Sheridan, who made some fine saves in the Dundalk goal.

NIE battled bravely and, except for some poor finishing and too many losses of possession, they could have won this game. Their greatest scoring threat, Marty McManus at Number Two, spent most of the entire game in defence much to the bewilderment of the many onlookers who had seen Marty’s scoring ability in their side’s semi-final victory over a fancied Naas. NIE gave a good performance overall with Eoin Maguire, JP Burke and Niall Cassidy coming to the fore.

The final score was Dundalk 2-8 to NIE Ops 1-8.

A special thanks must go to all teams who participated in the men’s competition: Dundalk, Naas, Cavan, ESBI, NIE OPS, NIE Cons, TOD, and EirGrid.

Full credit must be given to Athlone GAA Club for the immaculate condition of their pitches, dressing rooms and their overall facilities.

At a presentation dinner later that evening in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone, the winning teams were presented with the ESB Cup and trophies by new ESB GAA Club President Paul Stapleton (who has replaced the now retired Paddy Stapleton) and ESB GAA Chairman, Colum Grogan.

Colum welcomed the two NIE teams into the competitions and also welcomed NIE MD Joe O’Mahony and Senior Manager Con Feeney, who were in attendance. Colum expressed his gratitude to ESB Corporate Centre’s sponsorship, to all participants on the day and to Athlone GAA, the referees and the Shamrock Lodge for their excellent food, services and overall hospitality. He also mentioned the recent passing of two former ESB GAA chairmen JJ Bracken (Portlaoise) and Sean Coghlan (Cork).

Paul Stapleton paid tribute to all participants and paid special thanks to the organising committee on the day, Colum Grogan, John O’Riordan, Christy Goulding, Tony Heavin, Trish McElvaney, Eddie Nally and Pat Maleady for making the occasion such an entertaining and enjoyable day and night event.

Team Dundalk: John Sheridan, Christy Caroon, Kieran Carney, Andy Hynes, Damian Smith, Bryan McGuinness, Alan Page, Derek Mulligan, Brent Byrne and Stephen Carpenter. Managers: Enda McKeown and John Gannon.

Team NIE Operations: Eoin Maguire, Marty McManus, Chris Loughran, Chris O’Reilly, JP Burke, Niall Cassidy, Barry McAleer, Gareth Casement, Brendan McGrade Managers: Gerry McCaffrey, Francis McKillion and Kieran McCoy.

ESBI Ladies win Athlone Challenge With both ICT and EirGrid ladies teams unable to attend this year due to unforeseen circumstance, ESBI ladies took on Doon/Shannonbridge Ladies in what provided to be a very entertaining challenge match.

The match was played in harsh conditions with driving, swirling wind making it difficult for both teams.

In a no-holds-barred contest, ESBI got off to a flying start with a great goal scored by Caroline Gallagher, who was joined up front by Orlaith Harney and Rose Walsh. ESBI took advantage of playing with a strong breeze behind them in the first half and Catherine O’Brien and Orlaith Harney added a further three goals and three points before the break. The Shannonbridge/Doon Ladies ably answered with two goals and two points giving ESBI a half time lead of 4-3 to 2-2.

When play resumed, Shannonbridge/Doon started well and chipped away at ESBI’s 7 point lead, their turn to take advantage of the strong breeze. ESBI’s midfield of Catherine O’Brien, Pauline O’Callaghan and Alva Sheehy stemmed as much as possible the flow of ball to the Shannonbridge/Doon forwards and ESBI’s defence of Claire Mulholland, Sinead Conlon and AnnMarie Downey put in stalwart performances at times under pressure. The ever reliable Ciara Dolan, in goals, pulled off two crucial saves in that second half to keep ESBI in the game.

Shannonbridge/ Doon notched up 1-6 in the second half but hard fought scores by the ESBI forwards meant that ESBI held on for a two point victory, 5-4 to 3-8.

Catherine O’Brien was selected as player of the match with Orlagh Harney and Ciara Dolan close contenders.

Hopefully we will have ICT and EirGrid ladies competing again next year.

A special word of thanks to Eddie Nally for organising the local opposition of Doon/Shannonbridge and to Deirdre Newell for taking team and match photographs.
