Contract to install home charge points awarded

GAELTEC UTILITIES LTD, a Kilkenny-based company has been successful in winning a sizeable proportion of a contract from ESB ecars to install home charge points for electric cars nationwide. ESB is supplying home charge points to the first 2,000 purchasers of electric cars for free. Through a home charge point electric cars are fully charged overnight from the homeowner’s domestic electricity supply.

In addition to the roll out of home charge points, ESB ecars is rolling out the network of public and fast charge points across Ireland as well as implementing the supporting IT systems.

Gaeltec Utilities, on behalf of ESB ecars, has started to install home charge points throughout Ireland to the first owners of electric cars. The company has also integrated the first electric vehicle into its own commercial fleet of over 80 vehicles.

Paul Mulvaney, ESB ecars, Phil Hogan, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government and Sean Hannick, Gaeltec Utilities Ltd at the announcement of the ESB ecar home charge point installation contract award to Gaeltec.

At the contract signing event, Paul Mulvaney, Managing Director of ESB ecars, said, “We are delighted to be working with Gaeltec as we see home charging as vitally important to the success of electric car adoption in Ireland. Trials to date have shown that the majority of all charging occurs at home as it is the most cost effective and convenient method.”

E-taxi takes to the road

Ireland’s first e-taxi was unveiled in the city centre by ESB Chief Executive, Padraig McManus and NRC Director, Liam Brady and attended by the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte, TD.

ESB ECARS AND Dublin-based NRC Taxis have officially launched the first electric taxi service in Ireland. Two e-taxis, a Nissan LEAF saloon and a Peugeot people carrier with wheelchair accessibility, will be Dublin-based, offering customers a ‘greener’ way to travel within the capital. As well as offering environmentally friendly driving, minimal emissions and reduced noise, this initiative also gives the general public the opportunity to experience firsthand the benefits of electric cars.

The average daily mileage of a taxi in Dublin is in the region of 120km - well within the range of the Nissan LEAF, at 160km. The Peugeot Expert People Carrier has a range of 100km. Electric car charge points have been installed at NRC offices on James Street, Dublin 8, and in the homes of the two e-taxi drivers.

These e-taxis are available to the general public through the NRC pre-booking system, telephone number: 1800 767676

Dublin NW Benevolent Fund Retirement outing

The Dublin North West Benevolent Fund held their annual retired staff outing recently. This was their sixth such day out, which this year brought them to Trim Castle in Co. Meath and Castletown House in Celbridge. Twenty-seven retired staff took part and had a very enjoyable day, including 93-year-old Christy Hynes. Christy enthralled the group with stories of yesteryear including, when as a boy soprano, he sang at the Eucharistic Congress in the Phoenix Park in 1932 …and he is still singing! Entertaining on the bus was Mick Bolger on banjo and Paddy Fogarty on mandolin and a full cast of singers!
