8 NEWS Dec 2010 / Jan 2011 www.esb.ie/em Pakistan – the ESB community comes through again! DEsPiTE uNEMPLOYMENT, pay freezes and economic melt-down at home, despite having come through for haiti earlier in the year, the EsB community more than stepped up to the mark when ElectricAid launched our specialAppeal for Pakistan inAugust. We were reluctant to ‘go to the well’ again so soon, but felt we had no choice – and you responded magnificently! The Appeal has reached €120,000 – well beyond target – with more coming in. ‘Your generosity reminds us that it is One World’ staff across the company got involved, and opened their hearts. As well as the on-line donations from salary, we had cake sales, coffee mornings, impromptu dig-outs, too many to mention. some highlights stood out, like the whip-rounds by the head Office cleaning staff and by the staff in the garage in Wilton. They must have a very sweet tooth in stephen Court – EsBi’s cake sale there raised an incredible €2,400! One generous fan paid €800 for the ireland jersey donated and signed by Paul O’Connell. Over 150 staff who took the Pedometer Challenge donated an additional €3,600 for their Pedometers. EsB itself stepped in with a substantial donation, and EsB pensioners are still contributing - €13,000 so far. We have now funded four reputable and effective irish NGOs for their work in Pakistan - GOAL, Trócaire, Oxfam ireland and Concern received ESB win in thriller match with nIE EsB NARROWLY defeated NiE at the annual meeting of the two electricity network companies. The game, in Casement Park Belfast, was played under lights on saturday November 6th. This game was a close-fought encounter with both sides very evenly matched. EsB opened the scoring with a point by Ciaran Mc Manus from a ‘45’. Midway through the first half, David stevenson got NiE off the mark with a well-taken goal. This was followed by a point from play by Donal Kennedy. EsB reduced the deficit with a point from play from Johnny McConnell just before half time. The second-half started, like the first, with both sides missing a number of scoring opportunities. however EsB were first to score with another McManus point from a close in free and this was followed up with a welltaken goal scored by Tom Boylan for the visitors to take a two-point lead. Two well-taken points by stephen Brannigan brought NiE level again. As the game entered the final quarter, EsB went in front with another point from play by Ronan Durkan. NiE then had a let-off when a goalbound shot came off the cross-bar and the sharp actions of goalkeeper Danny Mc Donald cleared the ball to safety. Another David stevenson point brought NiE level but this was quickly nullified by EsB’s Enda McGrath point from a free. The final few minutes brought a flurry of scores with EsB stretching their advantage to two points through Ciaran McManus and Enda McGrath. Donal Kennedy had a great long-range point to reduce the deficit to the minimum, but EsB had the final say with a point in the final minute by Enda McGrath to run-out winners on a scoreline of EsB 1-7 to NiE’s 1-5. Alan Gallagher from Croke Park said, “We are delighted to participate in EsB ecars trial and test out electric driving. This is a fantastic move forward in the development of sustainable transport and as we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint with the Cúl Green initiative, green driving is part of our strategy.” Recent research has revealed that 56% of irish people are interested in participating in Cúl Green, a programme between EsB, Croke Park and consumers to keep Croke Park net carbon neutral by making a carbon saving pledge to save energy in their daily lives. Croke Park is ireland’s most visited sporting stadium and both EsB and the stadium have joined forces to help make it more sustainable. since the launch of Cúl Green in 2008 there have been over 110,000 visits to www.culgreen.ie and 92,000 pledges have been made. n alan Gallagher, Croke Park and Paul Mulvany, MD ESb Ecars.
