24 ENERGY INTERNATIONAL Dec 2010 /Jan 2011 www.esb.ie/em Life and times of a mechanical engineer 8 John Quinn, Mechanical Engineer, ESBI Engineering, tells us about his experience working with Generation Operations on the Moneypoint Environmental Retro-fit Project (MERP) and the Aghada CCGT Project. team was required to achieve the overall objectives. Tina Pittock, Project Engineer, ESBI O&M Solutions presenting a paper at Power-Gen Asia. John Quinn makes a final check on gas system prior to gas being supplied to the Aghada site for the first time. ESBI MoneyPoint environmental Retro-fit Project (MeRP) I began working with the Moneypoint Environmental retro-fit Project (MErP) team in September 2004. the principle objective of the project was to retrofit the station in order for it to comply with the large Combustion Plant directive 2001/80/EC which controls the emissions of oxides of nitrogen (nOx), sulphur dioxide (SOx) and particulate matter from large thermal power plants. One of the most demanding, yet rewarding, aspects of the project was as Station appointed Person (SaP). this involved working with the ESB Moneypoint Shift Managers and Operations team to develop solutions that allowed construction activities, inspections, testing etc. to proceed safely whilst maintaining the commitment to minimise the disruption to the generation plant. this involved complex plant configurations and isolations to ensure safe working conditions while the generating plant continued to operate. While I worked mainly on the abatement technology and in the management and co-ordination of works, during each of the generation unit outages a concerted teameffort from multi-disciplined ESBI and Generation Operations project Aghada CCGt Project I joined this project in July 2008, as the mechanical aspect of the construction was commencing. this project involved ESBI taking on the role of Owner’s representative for the delivery of state-of-the-art combined-cycle gas turbine technology plant at aghada Generating Plant. Similar to MErP, the project team was a multi-disciplinary group from across ESBI and Generation Operations. the integration of staff proved hugely beneficial and promoted synergy between all stakeholders. In addition to my mechanical role, I also took the role of Project Environmental representative, which meant I was responsible for ensuring that all activities on site complied with the existing IPPC license for the overall aghada Generating Station site. this required regular communication with the plant Environmental Co-ordinator and the local EPa Inspector. the aghada project was taken over by the client in april 2010. a team from alstom, ESBI and aghada Generating Station remain on site closing out remaining open items. I finished work on the aghada project at the end of June and have now returned to Stephen Court to join the Project Management Office team. n ESBI experts delivering on a world stage ESBI thE laSt FEW months have seen a huge demand for ESBI to deliver papers to international energy industry conferences. these occasions present ESBI with an opportunity to speak directly to leading experts in the field of power generation and distribution, and in turn positions ESBI as a world leader in power plant engineering and consultancy. Some recent conferences at which ESBI presented include: Power-Gen Asia, Singapore tina Pittock, Project Engineer, ESBI O&M Solutions presented a paper at the Power-Gen asia Conference on 2 november 2010. the paper, entitled ‘delivery of Effective Overhauls at ESB International Operated CCGt Power Plants to meet the Challenges of liberalised Energy Markets’, was co-authored by tina Pittock and dave Shepherd, Plant Manager, dublin Bay Power Plant. the paper examines how effective overhaul management delivers value to the owners of generating plants operating in diverse commercial environments. GCC Power Conference, Qatar Orla Burke and James Gallagher from the Power Systems Studies team in hV, ESBI Engineering both presented papers at GCC Power 2010 which took place in november. the papers generated a very high level of interest with many requests from delegates for further information about ESBI. the papers were ‘a Planning approach for urban distribution networks in Bahrain’ by Orla Burke, Stephen hunt and William Phang; and ‘the Effect of delayed Zero Crossings Following a Short Circuit on System Stability’ by James Gallagher, neil Mcdonagh and William Phang. experts Conference, Berlin donnchadh Irish presented a paper on the Moneypoint Environmental retrofit Project (MErP) at the fifth annual Experts Conference on 27 September 2010. Entitled ‘Exploring the retrofit of SCr and FGd technology at Moneypoint Coal-Fired Station to Meet the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) Emissions reduction Strategy in Ireland’, the paper explored how ESB delivered the retrofit of SCr and FGd technology to the existing Moneypoint 3x305MWe coal-fired station in Clare. n For further information on recent white papers authored by ESBI, please visit: http:// www.esbi.ie/news/white-papers.asp Renewable Energy Pilots ESBI aS Part OF the renewable Energy Pilot at 10 locations throughout the country, data is now becoming available on the wind and photovoltaic installations which is collected using the Energytracked monitoring system. Wind turbines have been installed by ESB Energy International at three locations – the training School in Portlaoise, the Carnamuggah lower depot in letterkenny and Erne Station at Cathaleen’s Fall, Ballyshannon – and a 4kW photovoltaic array has been installed on the on the roof of the Portlaoise training School . the Proven 6kW wind turbines in Portlaoise and Erne are installed on 15m towers, while the Iskra 5kW turbine at letterkenny is on a 12m tower. n Contractors at Rousch celebrate three years without Lost Time Injury ESBI On 28 October 2010, contractors at rousch Power Plant in Pakistan achieved three years without any lost time injury. a celebration lunch was held to mark the occasion and plaques were presented to each of the contracting companies. Muhammad tahir, ESBI Safety & Performance Engineer, razzaq anjum, ESBI Operations Manager, Paul Greenwood, ESBI Maintenance Manager and Mubashar Majeed, rousch (Pakistan) Plant ltd, Chief technical Officer all spoke about the safety culture at rousch and congratulated the contractors on their safety record. n readings (in kW hours) for the three months of august, September and October 2010 were as follows: Location Portlaoise Wind Letterkenny Wind Erne Wind Portlaoise Photovoltaic August 149 210 566 195 September 195 317 608 167 October 261 225 690 157 Total 605 752 1864 519 8kw Proven wind turbine at Cathaleen’s Fall station on the Erne.
