20 ENERGY INTERNATIONAL Dec 2010 /Jan 2011 www.esb.ie/em Innovative Illumination next year’s Woodcollective installation at Electric Picnic and other events. as well as public interest, there have been expressions of interest from researchers, public bodies and curators to Woodcollective’s activities this year. It is hoped to develop future collaborations with ESB and identify areas of mutual interest. Eugene acknowledged the support of ESBI Building Consultancy Group management, ESBI colleagues Mark Field who designed the exhibition material, and alan Burke who collaborated on the site build. logistical support was also given by ESB north Wall. n For further information and images of the Electric Picnic Collaboration with ESB see www.woodcollective.ie Presenters at the recent AMS Workshop in Athlone. ESB Sustainable Lighting of Woodcollective Project at Electric Picnic. ESB was official sustainability partner to Electric Picnic, driving energy efficiency and helping to reduce the festivals lighting emissions by 20%. At the AMS Workshop (l-r): John Higgins, Garry Cosgrove, Callaghan Ahern, Michael Fox and Michael Conry. ESBI thE rECEnt Woodcollective Exhibition, as part of Innovation dublin Festival, documented the 2010 collaborative project at Electric Picnic between industry, research organisations and State agencies. the project was supported by COFOrd, Wood Marketing Federation, Glennon Brothers and ESB. this year’s expanded project featured three structures, including the ‘Crashing Wave’ structure premiated in International Juried Competition in norway in May. all structures were prefabricated, demountable and reusable for other events. the sustainable lighting collaboration by ESB certainly had the ‘WOW!’ factor largely due to Kevin ryan who managed the ‘Picnic Power’ site build. the objective was to raise awareness, question assumptions and generate ideas about wood as a renewable, sustainable and versatile resource. the interpretative materials demonstrated innovative use of timber highlighting the wood product life cycle, wood fuels and the context of carbon sequestration. the installation became a popular meeting point for many of the 30,000 attendance at the festival. In June of this year, Eugene Boyle, coordinator of the project, was an assessor on the third level Wood design awards and a number of those entries will be exhibited in AMS Team’s first group workshop in Athlone ESBI ESBI EnGInEErInG Solutions’ asset Management Services team (aMS) held a workshop in athlone on thursday October 21st. ESBI Engineering Solutions designate Manager Billy Byrne officially opened the event. there followed addresses from Michael Fox, liam Walsh and Mick Mackey of the SMt. Bevin Cody gave a presentation on branding, and Michael Mahon, ann Wilson and Eva Kiss presented on SaP implementation in ESBI. aMS presentations were made by Michael Conry, Stewart Flood, Michael Gardner, lu Bai, Vincent Murphy, Stuart roche, Paul Clancy, niall Kearns, James Mullins, tim noonan and Brendan diggin. live equipment demonstrations were given by dominick Fitzsimons, dan Catanase, Stuart roche, Padraig O Sullivan, Gerry O ‘Brian, Pat Flynn and Callaghan ahern. a focus of the event was a workshop on safety, conducted by Safety advisor Paul Clancy. an interactive Staff Survey workshop was conducted by Siobhan Murphy and niall Kearns, both of aMS, and this proved highly successful in teasing out issues of importance to staff. the workshop’s penultimate session was devoted to safe driving, and a powerful presentation was given by Garda Jim Mcallister, followed by a very interesting and informative Q&a session. Speaking at the conclusion of the event, aMS Manager Mick Sherlock said, “this workshop proved a huge success and the event acted as an opportunity for the team to interact as a whole with the SMt to address specific work-life balance and safety issues. Most importantly, it acted as an ideal platform for our younger members of staff to showcase their talents and to gain experience from their colleagues, and we look forward to conducting a similar exercise again in the future”. a special note of thanks was made to Maureen Ferguson whose event organisation skills are second to none. n The ‘Crashing Wave’ structure premiated in International Juried Competition in Bergen, Norway in May. ESBI StudEntS, tEaChErS and parents from Ballinakill national School recently held their annual walk at derrybrien Wind Farm which, this year, raised funds to purchase music equipment for the school. Independent Generation’s Kieran tubridy explained the different aspects of the wind farm and turbines to the students as the walk progressed, and the students in turn later treated their guests to a recital with their new musical instruments. the students managed to raise over €700 to purchase new guitars, banjos and keyboards for the school band and Independent Generation was delighted to donate €900 in support. n lEadInG thE Way is Maureen Ferguson who amassed the phenomenal total of just under 946,000 steps. Part of her total was achieved by swimming ….in the open sea! Other team members following in Maureen’s wake are ray hester, noel Clarke (team Captain), Martin heavey and neil Quinn. Congratulations to neil and with his wife noelle (also of ESBI), who celebrated the birth of their daughter Kate, during the Pedometer Challenge. rumour has it that neil volunteered to do all the night time feeds in order to boost his step total, as he walked the floor while ‘winding’ the baby! n Pictured with the children of Ballinakill National School are: Kieran Tubridy of Independent Generation and Gerard Fahy, Principal. http://www.esb.ie/em http://www.woodcollective.ie
