10 NEWS Dec 2010 / Jan 2011 www.esb.ie/em Des moore retires hR challenges shared by few others. Des was always keen on research and believed that we should decide what we do based more on solid evidence rather than conjecture or opinion. he involved EsB in a number of research initiatives with affiliated bodies, which allowed us gather valuable insights and to compare ourselves with other organisations. he was the initial architect of the current ‘Apprentice / Engineering’ programme, which arose from the very significant EsB Employment initiative in April 2009. he brought together key stakeholders, primarily the Dublin and Cork institutes of Technology, and with them, developed a robust model to deliver a unique programme that will benefit the individuals trainees and both EsB and ireland inc. over future years. his understanding of the workings of the institute of Technology sector was well used during his time as head of school of Business and humanities at the institute of Technology Blanchardstown during a career break from EsB. Des has many interests outside EsB and will put his free time to good use. n Michael loughnane makes a presentation to Des to mark his retirement. Des was joined by his wife, Bernadette, for lunch with his colleagues to mark his departure. Although he has a technical engineering background (and retains a passion for technology and was always to one to consult on the latest mobile technology) and started his career in Marketing Department, Des hasworked for the last few years in Group hR and before that in numerous hR roles across the company. Those who have worked closely with Des over the years appreciate his unique, yet quiet and understated, contribution. The first class of 36 will commence their formal four year college course in september 2011. As part of a series of initiatives to increase the number of electrical engineering graduates, EsB has committed to fund up to 50 apprentices through the four year college course. There is currently a severe shortage of engineering graduates emerging from third level colleges. EsB is working in partnership with Dublin institute of Technology and Cork institute of Technology on this radical programme to address the deficit. speaking at the signing of the Mou at EsB headquarters in Dublin, the Company’s Chief Executive, Padraig McManus said: “in spite of the current economic recession, companies like EsB must continue to plan for the long term. We are witnessing a serious shortage of engineering graduates but this educational initiative will have a real and practical impact in terms of supplying the market with qualified personnel to build critical infrastructure and develop our economy. The programme also provides tremendous opportunities for those people on the course who will gain engineering degrees”. The apprentices embarking on the degree course were first recruited by EsB in september 2009. President of DiT, Professor Brian Norton said: ”We are delighted to work with our colleagues in EsB and with CiT on this initiative. DiT is committed to providing ladders of opportunity in all disciplines that allow students at all stages to progress to their highest achievable level of qualification and this is an excellent example.” President of CiT, Dr. Brendan J. Murphy said: “This is the sort of initiative that the country needs at this time and CiT is delighted to partner with the EsB and DiT in providing a career progression for apprentices to engineers and help to sustain and build ireland’s future”. n ThE EAsi-TRAVEL Plan is now available to EsB staff for 2011.
