ESB Hillwalkers reach new heights

THE ESB Hillwalking Club, ESB Hillwalkers, recently went on a one-week walking trip to the French Alps. The club is in existence since 1992 and currently has about 70 members from various locations within ESB. The club is run by a six-person committee that is elected at an AGM each year. Walks are organised once a month on Sundays and are usually in the Dublin/Wicklow mountains but can, from time to time, be held in other parts of Ireland. Membership is open to all current and retired ESB staff and their families. Club members are covered by insurance while out walking.

Prospective new members should contact the club secretary, Michael Murray, at 087798 0228 or the club treasurer, Jim Stanley, at 087929 0623, who will supply detailed information.

Note: The Club usually travels abroad once a year for a weeklong walking holiday. Organised by ‘France Outdoors’ (Vincent Lamy and Florance Budin, both natives of Provence who, have lived for eight years in Ireland and who arenot only fluent English but know the pace of our group!) ON A SUNNY Saturday in October, the event with the highest ESB staff participation took place in SPORTSCO! It was the five-a-side World Cup. One venue, three competitions, 33 teams, 280 competitors, and nine hours of quality football!

First order of the day was the men’s group competition, packed with talent, with eight teams out of 25 going through to the next round in some very closely fought games. With the group stages decided, the Ladies and Over 40s competitions got under way. The Ladies final was an ESBI affair, Chile vs. Canada, with the captain of the winning team, Catherine O’Brien, also receiving the Golden Boot Award. The Over 40s final was a tense match, with Pat Joyce’s ICT team (Italy) defeating Customer Supply, headed by Joe O’Connor (Tibet). Brian McMahon was awarded the Golden Boot.

The men’s competition concluded with a fantastic men’s final that saw Dave Keogh’s ESBI team (Vatican City) taking the cup for the second time in three years, triumphing over ICT, skippered by Alex Cowman (North Korea). James Finn took home the Golden Boot.

Metro Golf hosted a nearest the pin competition, with proceeds donated to ElectricAid.

Michael Loughnane, Group HR, presented the prizes and commented that it was great to see so many ESB staff participating directly in sport.
