The smart grid initiative in Ireland is one of the most comprehensive in the world, supporting aggressive targets for energy efficiency, electric vehicle integration and wind integration. EPRI smart grid demonstration projects are part of a fiveyear collaborative initiative with 18 energy utility members around the world. They focus on integrating distributed energy resources like demand response, storage, distributed generation, and distributed renewable generation to facilitate efficient and cost-effective deployment of utility and customer-side technologies and to enhance overall power system operations. EPRI’s Senior Vice President, Arshad Mansoor, said that in the past two years, EPRI and a number of electricity utilities had made significant progress in developing tools and references to support the advancement of distributed energy resources (DER) integration in large scale demonstrations. ‘‘The ESB Networks project will add to the knowledge we are acquiring that will in turn benefit all member utilities and the entire industry,” he added. Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Eamon Ryan, TD said, “The Smart Grid is the way forward for any modern electric system. Ireland is already ahead of our international counterparts in the development of the Smart Grid. Today’s partnership between ESB Networks and EPRI is proof that the rest of the world knows that Ireland is at the cutting edge of energy policy internationally. we will all benefit from the mutual sharing of knowledge.” n In this issue n n n n n n News . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 02 Energy Solutions . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 09 ESB Networks Ltd . . . . . . . . . . . . 16 ESB Energy International . . . . . 21 Sustainability . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 30 Health & Habitat . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 31 Continued on page 5 n Life . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 35 issn no. 0790-7508 http://www.esb.ie/em Table of Contents for the Digital Edition of EM - October/November 2010 EM - October/November 2010 In This Issue News Energy Solutions ESB Networks Ltd.
