4 NEWS Aug/Sept 2010 www.esb.ie/em Bernard Jackman wears the green shirt for Cúl Green bernArD JACKmAn showed a keen interest in the Cúl Green initiative at the recent Sportstracker Conference in Citywest on Saturday June 12th. The event is a multi-sports conference and is the first of its kind which will cover all sports in Ireland with the top international speakers. Colum Grogan and Philip Kelly attended the conference to showcase the Cúl Green initiative. Cúl Green is an exciting joint initiative between eSb and the GAA, aimed towards making Croke Park carbon-neutral. It involves environmental work within the stadium and a consumer website. eSb engineers led an Improvement Programme that has resulted in: • 12% less electricity used in 2009 compared to 2008. • 52% of waste being recycled and reused compared to 21% in 2008 • 312,000 litres of water saved per day. Furthermore, in may 2010, Croke Park became the first stadium in the world to be awarded bS8901 certification for its sustainability achievements. The Cúl Green website has enjoyed equal success with fans making over 95,000 energy saving pledges amounting to 9,000 tonnes of carbon saved. n For more information check out www.culgreen.ie and enjoy a Green 2010 Championship! On the same day, Ireland’s first ecar trialproject conducted by Trinity College Dublin’s School of engineering on behalf of eSb was also announced. As part of the trial, all-electric, zero-emission mitsubishi i-mieVs will be used throughout Ireland to support the planning and implementation of the eSb nationwide charging infrastructure. The customer behaviour and attitudes research undertaken by Trinity College is crucially important to gaining an understanding of how customers will want to use their ecars. minister eamon ryan said, “Today’s memorandum with mitsubishi and eSb’s trial with Trinity College is another important milestone in the electrification of the Irish motoring fleet. Ireland is leading the way and with such innovation from eSb, TCD and our new partnership with mitsubishi, our international position is further strengthened. Irish drivers and the Irish economy will only benefit.” A ‘smart’ home charging system will be trialled that will allow cars to maximise the amount of energy they get ...another from renewable important sources, while milestone in the also facilitating electrification the operation of of the Irish the electricity motoring fleet. system. This is a key requirement for a successful transition to carbon neutral sustainable travel. eSb Chief executive, Padraig mcmanus said, “Ireland is at the forefront of adopting electric vehicles and eSb is pressing ahead with its charge points programme. As a major force in the global market, mitsubishi motors’ endorsement of Ireland as an environment for ecars is extremely encouraging. The pilot project will provide eSb with a “ more in-depth knowledge of how the technology and its integration into the electricity network will work.” Viewing Ireland as an ideal market for electric vehicles in europe, mitsubishi motors has made available the all electric mitsubishi imieVs in advance of the european launch in October 2010. Commenting on imieV trial in Ireland, billy riordan, Group managing Director, mitsubishi motors Ireland said, “Ireland is the perfect test environment for electric vehicles. We are traditionally a small-car market, we have ample renewable energy resources, as well as an environmentally-conscious and responsible consumer. With sufficient focus and investment, Ireland can be a world leader in the introduction of electric vehicles. With the commercial launch of the mitsubishi i-mieV later this year, we are hoping to lead the charge in this exciting new driving experience for Irish motorists.” n Check it out!
