www.esb.ie/em Aug/Sept 2010 ENERGY INTERNATIONAL 27 ESBI takes leading role at PAC world conference Dublin ESBI ESBI TooK a leading role in organising the inaugural Protection, Automation and Control (PAC) World Conference, which was held in Trinity College, Dublin, from Monday to Thursday June 21 to 24. The event attracted a wide range of delegates from the PAC World community, including utility professionals and experts from universities, manufacturers and consultancies. ESBI Consultants Manager Clare Duffy and ESBI Engineering Head of Engineering Mick Mackey were both on the organising committee for the event. After the conference was opened by PAC World magazine Editor-inChief Dr. Alexander Apostolov ESB Deputy Chief Executive John Shine gave the keynote address on SMArT networks. ESBI had an exhibition stand at the conference where staff met representatives from utilities around the world. A technical visit was also organised for participants on Friday June 25th to the 12MW Carnsore Point Windfarm in Co. Wexford. Here the good weather, scenery and technical know-how of staff from ESBI o&M Solutions added to the enjoyment and success of the day. CIGRÉ working group hosted by ESBI ESBI ESBI WAS delighted to host two CIGrÉ working groups recently. The sessions focused on High Voltage (HV) substations and issues relating to power system disturbances. Session one involved Working Group B3-23 and was aimed at developing a set of guidelines for uprating and upgrading HV Substations. Hugh Cunningham, from ESBI Engineering Substation Design, is the designated ESBI representative on this working group. The session included a site visit to Carrickmines 220kV substation (Dublin), which was kindly accommodated by ESB networks. Session two revolved around CIGrÉ Joint Working Group C4.207 (with CIrED), which is presently tasked with developing a guide for ‘Assessment of Transferred Earth Potential rise on Telecommunications Systems Due to Faults in A.C. Power Systems’. Ken Atkinson, of ESBI Engineering Power System Studies, is the designated ESBI representative on this working group. Members attending the session included professionals from the energy industry and universities in Ireland, the UK, Sweden, Hungary and Canada. About CIGRE ESBI is an active member of CIGrÉ, which stands for Conseil International des Grands réseaux Électriques or in English the International Council on Large Eelectric Systems. Issues related to the planning and operation of power systems, as well as the design, construction, maintenance and disposal of HV equipment and plants are at the core of CIGrÉ’s mission. Guest of Honour, Joe McDonagh former President of the GAA and current Chairman of Galway Vocational Educational Committee (VEC), highlighted the important role ESB plays in meeting Ireland’s renewable energy targets, during his speech to students. St. Bridget’s school in Loughrea is located near ESBEI’s Derrybrien Windfarm.
