Ciaran and Finnian, both teaching colleagues at Omagh CBs, were in different camps for the final being ex Tyrone and current Armagh players respectively. n Derry City Council committed to environmental programme ESBIE DeRRY CiTY Council is leading the way when it comes to renewable energy sources, reducing both carbon emissions and energy bills. Thanks to a new contract it looks set to improve its ‘green’ credentials and make significant financial savings. As part of a new contract with esB independent energy (esBie), the main Civic Offices and the City of Derry Airport are supplied with electricity from a 100% renewable source. since 2003, Derry City Council has increased its green energy usage to over 50% from a base of 18% facilitated by the introduction of supply from esBie’s renewable sources. This is in line with the Council’s environmental strategy which has actively been reducing its energy consumption through various initiatives, resulting in an annual reduction in carbon emissions of over 700 tonnes and a financial saving on energy bills of over £225,000 annually, based on figures for 2006/2007. “i am absolutely delighted to see Derry City Council is at the forefront in supporting renewable energy sources,” said Mayor, Cllr Colum eastwood. “i think we are all conscious today of the damage that is being done to the environment and of spiralling energy costs, so the Council’s move towards ‘green’ energy is to be welcomed by all. This is a great step forward and is helping to encourage ESBIE Business in the Community (BiTC), northern ireland recently held its fifth annual Regional Recognition Gala Awards Dinner at The Waterfront Hall in Belfast. Celebrating the power of responsible leadership, the awards focus on how business conducts itself – in the workplace, the environment, the economy and the community. Hugely successful, the event acknowledges northern ireland companies that demonstrate excellence in Corporate and social Responsibility and saw firms battle it out for the coveted title of northern ireland’s Responsible Company of the Year and other categories. in what is the first of a three year commitment, the events core sponsor was esB independent energy (esBie). With entries up 20% on last year and over 490 people attending, the audience waited with anticipation as the various category winners were announced. The night was one of celebration and the top prize, northern ireland Responsible Company of the Year, went to Diageo northern ireland, a worthy winner. esB Chief executive, Padraig McManus was on hand to present the awards and addressing the large gathering spoke of how he first became aware of BiTC and subsequently got involved. The President spoke of the need for greater social inclusion and the need to protect the less well off in our neighbourhoods and include those, who, for whatever reason, feel that they are excluded and on the outside of our society. The Regional Recognition Awards are now established as an integral part of the northern ireland business calendar, and companies – whether the overall winner, a category winner, or a shortlisted company – deserve hearty congratulations for showing responsible leadership and for acting as a force for good in our society.
