ESB Athletic Club update
THE SUMMER months have led to an increase in the number of people taking a break from the office and heading out for a run at lunchtime. Favourite haunts, such as Herbert Park with its cushioned grass surface, Sandymount with its coastal benefits and Trinity where speed work can be worked on, are all proving popular. The regulars have all been spotted heading out and I'm happy to say that new runners of different standards have also joined in.
All of the above has benefited our results in the races that we have entered, with the men's team notably running well enough to win Grade B in Trinity and the first ladies team of the year performed well in Phoenix Park. Keep up the good work guys!
If you would like to join the lunchtime runners, then contact one of the committee members or meet in the Head Office changing area between 12:15-12:30 most days. The first Thursday of each month is particularly reserved for new runners; we look forward to seeing you!
Club membership information is available from committee members.
ESB beach race
This year's ESB 5k Beach Race took place on May 11th, there was a good turnout in conditions which varied from reasonable to heavy rain. Most of the ESB Athletics Club had tested the route earlier in the month and on the day organised the event including car parking, athlete registration, course setup, marshalling and timing of competitors. Not to forget the tea, coffee and brack gang who welcomed the runners back to the clubhouse! Big thanks to all involved and congratulations to the event winners; Dave Byrne (KIT) in 15’ 53” and Stephanie Bergin (AIB) in 19’ 34”.

Over the hills in Roundwood
ESB's ‘Over The Hills’ Walking Group launched its inaugural outing on Monday June 21st, when glorious sunny weather provided a gorgeous backdrop to a terrific day's hiking. After copious cups of tea and scones in Poppies of Enniskerry, we headed off for a circuit of the Roundwood reservoirs. The level terrain, welcome shade and stunning views provided a smashing ambience for our first foray into the wilds of Wicklow! The three-hour hike was nicely rounded off with more tea and scones in the Bistro in Roundwood with talk of perhaps attempting a circuit of Merrion Square before the summer is out!
