CIGRÉ working group hosted by ESBI
ESBI
ESBI WAS delighted to host two CIGRÉ working groups recently. The sessions focused on High Voltage (HV) substations and issues relating to power system disturbances.
Session one involved Working Group B3-23 and was aimed at developing a set of guidelines for uprating and upgrading HV Substations. Hugh Cunningham, from ESBI Engineering Substation Design, is the designated ESBI representative on this working group. The session included a site visit to Carrickmines 220kV substation (Dublin), which was kindly accommodated by ESB Networks.
Session two revolved around CIGRÉ Joint Working Group C4.207 (with CIRED), which is presently tasked with developing a guide for ‘Assessment of Transferred Earth Potential Rise on Telecommunications Systems Due to Faults in A.C. Power Systems’. Ken Atkinson, of ESBI Engineering Power System Studies, is the designated ESBI representative on this working group. Members attending the session included professionals from the energy industry and universities in Ireland, the UK, Sweden, Hungary and Canada.

Awards Day sponsorship promotes wind energy
ESBI
ESB ENERGY International (ESBEI) sponsored an Awards Day held recently at St. Bridget's Vocational School, Loughrea, Co. Galway. Students received awards recognising academic and sporting excellence throughout the year. Guest of Honour, Joe McDonagh former President of the GAA and current Chairman of Galway Vocational Educational Committee (VEC), highlighted the important role ESB plays in meeting Ireland's renewable energy targets, during his speech to students.
St. Bridget's school in Loughrea is located near ESBEI's Derrybrien Windfarm. Sponsorship of the Awards Day is just one of the many ESBEI initiatives underway to promote wind energy education in the community.
