ESBI safety committee goes from strength to strength

AS PART of the OHSAS 18001 implementation process and the ongoing development of the safety management system, the ESBI Safety Committee was formed in 2008 and is going from strength to strength. As a key part of the staff safety consultation process, the committee provides an important forum for staff and management on all Health and Safety (H&S) issues.

Last year, 2009 was a full year for the committee, which provides a means to share learning and make a considerable and practical contribution to H&S in the company. This contribution included:

• Solving staff welfare issues in consultation with ESBI Facilities.
• Agreeing standards for the purchase of new Personal Protective Equipment.
• Developing travel safety guidelines.
• Developing initiatives to improve visitor safety induction.
• Undertaking a company-wide safety communications survey.

Energy And Water Conservation Expo 2010 – Bahrain

ENERGY AND Water Conservation Expo 2010 which took place in June provided an opportunity for ESBI to increase its profile among the energy industry in the Gulf Region. Visitors to the stand included: His Excellency Fahmi Bin Ali Al Jowder, Bahrain's Minister of Works (with responsibility for Electricity), the United Arab Emirates Minister of Energy and Chief Executive of the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), Dr. Abdulmajeed Ali Al-Awadhi, and his deputy chief executives, as well as senior representatives from the many large industrial electricity consumers in Bahrain and the wider Gulf Region. The event Chairperson Mr. Adnan Fakhro, Deputy Chief Executive of EWA, expressed his sincere appreciation to ESBI for their active participation at the conference.

Student numbers rise at Bloomfield Hall School, Rousch Power Plant in Pakistan

BLOOMFIELD HALL School at Rousch Power Plant in Pakistan opened in January 2009 to provide quality education to the children of plant staff and of the local community. Since then, student numbers have increased to 108, reflecting the positive reaction of students, staff and the surrounding community to the opening of the school.

Before the school was established, the children faced a 50km road journey to Khanewal, which took over two hours per day and involved inherent security and safety risks. Now children no longer have to make the long journey and facilities like air conditioning ensure that students are protected from extreme weather conditions. ESBI donated equipment and the set-up of an extra curricular programme of activities, including karate, drama and singing, ensure that children take full advantage of both academic and physical pursuits.

Bloomfield Hall is governed by a school board comprising of ESBI and Rousch Pakistan Power representatives. Speaking on behalf of the board, Mr. Akhtar Hussain Malik, Senior Controller Finance & Administration (ESBI O&M Solutions), said it appreciated the ‘experienced and hard working teaching staff, who continuously invest their time so enthusiastically for the better education of the children’.

Sustainability in motion at Stephen Court

Stephen Court's EnergyTracked system reduces consumption

AN ENERGY monitoring system called Energytracked has been in operation throughout 2009 and 2010 to measure energy consumption in each block and on each floor of Stephen Court, Dublin.

Energytracked is at present monitoring lighting and power, however its functionality can also be extended to include gas and water.

Figures for energy use at Stephen Court show an energy reduction of 6% from January to May 2010 when compared to the same period in 2009.

Energy use for blocks D&E (also known as ‘House 16’) show an energy reduction of 8.5% from January to May 2010 when compared to 2009.

Energytracked is also reporting an overall energy reduction in Stephen Court between 2009 and 2010 of 7.25%

These savings are a result of staff behaviour changes and also security contractors switching off lights in the evenings. It's amazing how such simple sustained behaviour changes can lead to such positive benefits in saving both money and saving energy.

The next project planned for the location is the monitoring of water usage using Energytracked.

Investing in innovative clean technologies

John McKiernan of ESB's novusmodus recently presented a Lunch and Learn event in Stephen Court, Dublin, on insights into the current state of technology development in the investment sectors that novusmodus is focusing on. The session also provided staff with an overview of projects and companies invested in, so far, by the ESB Novusmodus fund.
