Civil & Structural training programme devised by Imperial College London
ESBI
AS PART OF ESBI's commitment to continuous professional development, the Civil and Structural (C&S) team has introduced a new three-year training programme for graduate engineers. Launched in February 2010, the training programme will be delivered by Thomas Telford Training (UK) and incorporates three key components:
- A series of technical lectures (including design workshops) covering a broad spectrum of civil and structural engineering topics, many of which are focused on the use of Eurocodes.
- A series of design projects to ensure graduates use their training on practical design projects.
- A mentoring arrangement whereby more experienced engineers from the Civil and Structural area provide support to participants.
The design projects have been devised by Dr Um Leong Tay, of Imperial College London, and are based on questions from the Institute of Structural Engineers chartered membership exam.
Three projects of approximately 12 weeks duration are scheduled for each year of the programme. Each project requires engineers to develop practical solutions for major structures, such as multi-storey buildings, large power plants, offshore structures, bridges and reservoirs. A strong emphasis is placed on the geotechnical aspects of the proposed solutions.
At the end of the three year programme, participants will have a sound understanding of structural engineering principles and the ability to design a broad spectrum of structures.
Cardiovascular heath screening
Benefits of screening outlined at recent Lunch and Learn event
ESBI
A RECENT Lunch and Learn event held at Stephen Court, Dublin outlined the benefits of Cardiovascular Heath Screening, which is being offered to all staff (and spouses/partners) from Monday July 19th. The programme is being run as part of ESB's commitment to Heath and Wellbeing and includes a number of tests such as blood pressure, weight/height measurement and blood screening for glucose and cholesterol.
