ONSIDE / INTERVIEW

NICK HOPKINSON
"I DON'T FEEL IT'S A CHOICE.
IT'S WHO I AM."
Nick Hopkinson has climbed mountains, ran marathons and raised £1 million for
charity in one night alone. Welcome to a remarkable morning with Hoppy.

N

ick Hopkinson says he spends 80 per cent of his time
"messing about or fundraising". Officially he's a vicepresident of Bolton Lads and Girls Club, but walking
around the centre it's clear he's far, far more than that.
Twice a year he leads a team up Kilimanjaro, he's constantly
cajoling friends, businesses and contacts - who get the call
from "Hoppy", as he's known - to do something for the
project that was born out of an informal "Dads and Kids
Committee" that gave birth to the idea in 1990 over a few
drinks in the pub."I don't feel it's a choice. It's who I am."

"Every time you see a young person who's life you have
changed it has a huge effect on you. There are people I've
climbed a mountain with who I now have a very special
bond with. You pick up their qualities in that situation
that you simply wouldn't do. And when you see someone
struggling you lift them up and give them a hug. People find
things out about themselves too," he says.
That all backs up the point he wants to get across, that the
work at the club and the fundraising he does is important
for three different reasons, he says. "What you do for the
kids that benefit, the positive effect that fundraising has
on teamwork in a business or workplace and the feeling
of achievement that an individual gets by their ability to
change lives and do something so positive."

It's a feeling that is echoed at Gorilla Accounting, Seneca's
Bolton based contractor accounting business which recently
completed the Hellrunner endurance test to raise money for
the club. Bonds are formed and team spirit is bolstered.
In business Nick Hopkinson had a good life. He was in the
furniture sector running Mark Two, a successful distributor,
with his brother Chris. Since selling it he's backed a number
of other ventures, including AO.com, the baby of his former
salesman John Roberts and is an active investor as part of
the Seneca network.
