Part one of the guide provides some in-depth
information on how best to grow a business
through the variety of deals which can facilitate it.
There are various features on the deal types that
can aid growth, the processes by which these
deals are done, and specific techniques that all
business owners might consider.
We have focused on three different types of deal
that are the most common forms to accelerate
business growth: management buyouts, private
equity investment and the acquisition route.
Owners of businesses may find the prospect
of selling the company to the management more
palatable than selling to another company or
investor. The team has contributed to the success
of the business and is much more emotionally
attached to the business. The management buyout feature catalogues the process of selling the
business to the management team and looks at
some of the common pitfalls.
The private equity feature provides a detailed
analysis of all that is involved in deciding why and
how to work with a private equity firm, and what
benefits they might bring to the business. There is
valuable information on how private equity works,
what private equity firms look for in a business
and how best to make the business attractive for
potential investors.

Acquiring other businesses, or parts of other
businesses, is another of the ways companies
can grow. And it's not just large companies eating
up smaller ones. It is becoming a much more
common scenario for acquisitions to be made by
relatively small companies.
Many business leaders realise that making an
acquisition can be a faster and more sustainable
means of growing the business. But for a
successful acquisition to be achieved there are
many factors that need to be considered.
And, of course, some of these issues will concern
the company being acquired.
The feature on acquisition strategies unpicks
many of the issues that are common to all
acquisitions, no matter what the size and scale.
We outline the processes that businesses
need to go through and look at many of the features of a successful acquisition strategy.
The final feature within this part of the guide
focuses on the options business owners have to
consider to fund growth. Investing in a business
helps it grow. But what investments to make,
and how to fund them, are some of the most
important decisions any business needs to make.
Investments might need to be made to buy
machinery, develop new products, improve
efficiency or to expand premises.
