ESC Congress FA eBook 2016 - ii

Dear Practitioner,
We are pleased to share with you this special issue of ESC Congress in Review 2016 with a focus on arrhythmias from
presentations at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress held in Rome, Italy.
Practitioners take care of patients every day with cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation. The articles in this
issue aim to provide a comprehensive view of the latest research focused on the treatment of patients with arrhythmias. The featured article takes a closer look at the new guidelines on atrial fibrillation that were released earlier this
year by the ESC.
Some of the interesting highlights in this special report include results from the ENSURE-AF trial, which was the
largest randomized study of anticoagulation for patients undergoing electrical cardioversion for atrial fibrillation.
Results showed that both edoxaban and traditional treatment with warfarin plus as-needed enoxaparin produced low
and similar rates of ischemic and bleeding outcomes. This suggests that edoxaban is a convenient (once daily oral),
effective, and safe alternative to standard therapy for patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing electrical cardioversion and may allow for prompt cardioversion following the start of oral anticoagulation.
The identification of patients with atrial fibrillation who have a truly low risk for thromboembolic events and
do not need to receive anticoagulation therapy is an ongoing challenge. One study compared the performance of
CHA2DS2-VASc with a novel computer-generated risk model, developed using data from the GARFIELD-AF registry.
In the study, the performance of the GARFIELD score was superior to CHA2DS2-VASc for predicting ischemic stroke
in all patients and in importantly in those with a low risk of stroke.
In addition to the results from clinical trials and registry updates, you will also find information on reducing the
burden of atrial fibrillation through prevention and treatment, updates on treating atrial fibrillation in a complex
environment, and the use of miniature leadless pacing systems.
We hope that you find the articles and practical perspectives that are contained in this special focused edition of
ESC Congress 2016 in Review helpful in integrating this new information into your clinical practice.
