ESC CONGRESS 2016
IN REVIEW

FOCUS ON ARRHYTHMIAS

Dear Colleagues,
We are delighted to present to you this focused issue of ESC Congress 2016 in Review. The topic of arrhythmias was
selected because of its increasing presence in our daily clinical practice and the therapeutic challenges it presents. The
peer-reviewed highlights in this issue come from presentations at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress
2016 held in Rome, Italy.
Village 4 of the congress venue was dedicated to the topic of arrhythmias. We encourage you to continue this scientific exchange with your colleagues by consulting the arrhythmias section of ESC Congress 365, the online library to
view thousands of videos, slides, abstracts and reports from ESC Congress.
In this focused issue on arrhythmias, the featured article is dedicated to taking a closer look at what is new in the
2016 ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines on atrial fibrillation (AF). Selected updates address practical issues related to
reducing the burden of AF through prevention and treatment, and a discussion of the definitions of valvular and nonvalvular AF and how to use novel oral anticoagulants to treat AF patients with valve disease.
Among the Hot Line trials of importance in arrhythmias in this issue is the ENSURE-AF study. Data from this trial
showed that patients with AF who need anticoagulation before undergoing cardioversion may benefit from treatment
with edoxaban; edoxaban had similar rates of major bleeding and thromboembolism compared with well-managed,
optimized enoxaparin/warfarin therapy.
We hope that the articles and practical perspectives presented in ESC Congress 2016 in Review - Focus on Arrhythmias
will offer you new insights into several areas of treatment of patients with AF. To access ESC Congress content (videos,
slides, abstracts, and reports) all year long, visit us online at www.escardio.org/365.
We wish you all the best in the coming year and hope to see you in Barcelona for ESC Congress 2017. For more
