A

t NAB 2017, Omnitek launched
the Ultra TQ which is a
broadcast waveform rasterizer
aimed squarely at broadcasters
attempting to continue 'business
as usual' in an ever-changing
technological landscape.
The Ultra TQ builds on the
success of the Ultra platform
and
inherits
functionality
from the highly successful
Ultra 4K Tool Box and the
Ultra XR products to provide
a comprehensive set of tools
to support broadcasters with HDR
/ WCG production and connectivity
challenges.
Future Proof
Omnitek's design philosophy was
to create a hardware platform that
would be as future proof as possible
and with the flexibility to be adapted
to future industry needs. The
hardware platform has two parts, a
main board and a mezzanine board.
The main board electronics allow test
and measurement to be performed
on the selected interface while the
mezzanine board provides additional
interfaces not present on the main
board.
The Ultra TQ supports analysis and
generation of all formats up to 3G-SDI
as standard with an upgrade path
to 4K/UHD if needed. It is aimed at
broadcast production, engineering,
outside broadcast, operations and
control rooms that require the
comprehensive tools that are offered
as standard. The new IP Option allows

the SFP cage on the main board to be
used with a SMPTE 2110 SFP module
to transform Ultra TQ into an IP
connected waveform monitor.
The Ultra TQ can be supplied in
two different forms, the Ultra TQ and
the Ultra TQ +. The Ultra TQ is a low
entry cost unit with a single board
providing three bidirectional 3G-SDI
connections, a single dedicated SDI
output and a single dedicated SDI
input for physical layer analysis.
The Ultra TQ + provide 2 additional
SDI inputs and 2 additional SDI
outputs as well as a DisplayPort
output connection. The Ultra TQ +
allows the unit to be upgraded in the
field to 4K and 12G-SDI operation
and minimal extra cost. This is a very
attractive option if you need to always
keep key equipment in place.
Monitoring Tools
The Analyser instruments within the
Ultra TQ include picture, waveform
monitor, vectorscope, gamut meters,
full audio monitoring and loudness

measurement, video timing, video
/ audio status monitoring, event
logging and closed caption logging
as standard. These can monitor
either one of the SDI inputs or the
SMPTE 2110 SFP input. This makes
the Ultra TQ ideal for a mixed SDI / IP
environment where you just want to
look at the content and not design the
IT infrastructure.
The Picture monitor provides a
high-quality display with closed
captions overlay, safe area cages and
O-ZoneTM display for HDR and SDR
production.
The Waveform monitor can display
YCbCr or YRGB and provides full
horizontal & vertical zoom of single,
multiple or all line displays. Analysis
of full frame video or Region of
Interest can be made.
Audio Meters displays 16 audio
channels with industry standard
ballistics and scales. Loudness Meter
supports EBU RP 128, ITU-R BS.17701, 2, 3, ATSC A/85, ARIB TR-B32 and
OP-59 to allow program or continual
loudness logging.
Ultra TQ provides logging of all
physical and functional parameters
of the video signal against timecode,
ideal for program QC and Compliance.
The integrated line test pattern
generator allows the generation of 38
line-patterns. This can be upgraded
to a full test pattern generator with
a range of zone plates and test
sequences that can be output as SDI
or IP.
Physical layer analysis and advanced
physical layer analysis are available
as options for use anywhere signal
integrity needs to be checked.

The Ultra TQ benefits from a simple,
easy to use and clean user interface.
This allows it to be readily adopted by
a range of users from those who need
to use the sophisticated functionality
to the casual operator who needs to
find the information without having to
study the manual.
To keep the Ultra TQ user interface
clean, menus are contextual
with
relevant
functions
appearing when an instrument
tile is selected. When a tile is
selected, its corresponding
control panel is displayed at
the right of the screen to allow
adjustment of the instrument's
parameters. A button bar also
appears at the bottom of the
screen for quick selection of some
of the common parameters with
more comprehensive, system-wide,
settings available in the corresponding
configuration menu.
For
monitoring
and
display
applications, all the unnecessary
instrument labelling can be hidden so
just the waveforms are displayed.
Optional Functions
The Ultra TQ option structure has
been designed to provide the basic
functionality required as standard
with options to enable the more
sophisticated functionality for more
specialised analysis.
If you decide to invest in an Ultra
TQ you only need to purchase the
functionality that you immediately
need. Extra functionality can be added
in the future as required.
As part of Omnitek's continual
product development programme,
new functionality developed within
a software option is available free of
charge. New functional options are
added at major software releases and
these can also be purchased at any
time. For version 3.4 this includes
IP support, Lissajous, S-Log input
profiles as well as HDR line patterns
generation.
Omnitek's
continuous
product
development plan means that regular
feature releases are available so
that customers can benefit from
new advances. The shared code base
across all Ultra products means if one
product gets new features, these are
available on the other Ultra family
products.
