Optimise content monetisation
A large broadcast network customer
of Verizon Digital Media Services uses
Smartplay to maximise its streaming
revenue. This customer has a very
popular mobile app that handles
content from multiple owned and
affiliated local stations. Rather than
forcing the viewer to select the closest
station, the app automatically does
it for them. Not only can the viewer
easily access their local news, but the
app also allows the broadcast network
and local stations to target local
consumers. The station and network
are able to sell local ads in addition
to national ads, thus increasing their
revenue opportunities. Since the
app is registered to each viewer's
device, information about that viewer
enables more accurate ad targeting.

OTT clipping workflows
For pre-recorded, episodic content,
the responsibility for generating clips
for OTT distribution can be made
part of the editing process when
programmes are assembled prior to
broadcast. For live news and sports
programmes, this is not an attractive
option, particularly when finished
content only becomes available during
the broadcast. The resulting files,
which contain all of the finished video,
audio, graphics and closed captions,
can then be used to create the clips for
OTT services and online destinations.

Once the clips have been edited and
labelled, they need to be prepared

Century
Communications

Accessibility Act (CVAA) requires that
online video clips of programming
that originally aired with captions
be posted with captions as well. The
final phase of the regulation rollout requires that clip of all live and
near-live captioned programming
have captions within 12 hours of
posting beginning in July, 2017.2 Our
