MAM or Mini-MAM - Archiware P5
MAM or mini-MAM that is the question. Dr Marc M. Batschkus
explains how Archiware P5 Archive can help in both cases...

ith file numbers growing
dramatically, finding the right
asset can be a challenge. This makes
MAM systems more popular than ever.
They allow to tag and search media
and support the workflow in multiple
ways.
There are many good reasons to use
MAM systems:
* Big number of files used for
production;
* Many asset sources (new and old
combined);
* Multiple ingest sources;
* Complex review and approval
process;
* Big staff and changing roles;
* Combination with other
e.g. newsroom systems.
In these cases, a MAM system
connects the users to the assets.
Assets of any age and source, online
or archived (off-line) can be searched
and combined. The MAM holds it
all together. There is a multitude of
features that MAMs offer that justify

the investment and can't be covered
here.
Archiware P5 Archive manages the
storage backend and the Archive for
the MAM system. Within the MAM
interface, archived material can be
browsed and the MAM calls P5 Archive
to restore it. MAM systems that offer
integrations with P5 Archive: CatDV,
FocalPointServer, Cantemo, eMAM,
axle, Keyflow Enterprise etc.

But there are other scenarios
where a mini MAM with limited
functionality and less complexity is
enough. Archiware's P5 Archive can
be considered a mini-MAM and might

be sufficient with the following
conditions:
* Limited number of
editors and producers;
* Fixed roles for each
person;
* Limited set of files use
for production;
* Use of mostly new files;
* Archive serves as reference and
repository and is only searched
if needed;
* No means, support and training
for complex MAM and server
structure available.
Under these conditions, companies
immensely profit from an Archive as
a central repository for reference and
re-use.
But since this does not happen on a
daily basis, searching and retrieving
files from the archive in the P5
interface only takes place if and when
needed. The Archive financially pays
off because local storage needs less
expansion when all completed files

are moved to the Archive. As an addon, the P5 Archive App makes it even
easier with a Finder FCP X integration
- archiving with just a right-click.
The benefits of P5 Archive as a mini
MAM are considerable:
* Save local storage by archiving
everything that is completed;
* Save time searching for previous
productions;
* Tag files in the way that makes
sense for your company;
* Compare and reference files
easily and fast;
* Protect all assets for the
long-term;
* Easy off-site storage.
