BC celebrates its 50th anniversary
this year. From humble beginnings
in 1967 when we were exploring
the advent of colour television,
to this year's event that includes
examinations
of
AR/VR
and
personalised content delivery, we've
come a long way.
Streams & Keynotes
One
significant
development
from that first IBC is the nature of
the conference. The founders were
insistent that an exhibition needed
a technical conference, and in
1967 it was based solely on papers
outlining the latest research. Today
the technical papers programme
still forms the centrepiece of the
conference, and it is still seen as
the most important and the most
prestigious place to introduce new
thinking. But today our conference
is much broader, speaking to the
creative and commercial people
in our community as well as the
engineering and operational.
This year's conference is subtitled
Truth, Trust and Transformation,
and has five tracks running over the
five days: Advances in Technology;
Business Transformation; Content
and Production; Audiences and
Advertising; and Platform Futures.
The Keynote Sessions provide
a broad view of where we are as
an industry. The opening keynote
- featuring Dan Danker, Product
Director at Facebook and Jørgen
Madsen Lindemann, President & CEO
at Modern Times Group - will explore
how the rise of fan and friend power
in the media ecosystem is driving
new approaches to broadcasting,
as well as paving the way for new
partnerships and funding models;
Brian Sullivan, President & COO,
Digital
Consumer
Group,
Fox
Networks Group at 21st Century
Fox, will take to the stage to deliver
insight into the American market and

developments of Fox Network's
leading TV Everywhere services;
Balan Nair, Executive Vice
President and Chief Technology
Officer at Liberty Global will
join other key industry leaders
for the CTO Roadmap Keynote;
and Rikard Steiber, President,
Viveport and SVP Virtual
Reality, HTC, delivers the
Technology Forward Keynote,
'What's Happening in VR, AR and
Mixed Reality', looking at the
emerging swathe of consumer
devices and services, as well
as showcasing successful VR
experiences across platforms.
Consumers
used
to
watch
television, because that was all that
the technology could achieve. Today,
they expect to choose what they
watch, when and where they want to
watch it, on the device and platform
that happen to be convenient at the
time. The Platform Futures strand
looks at how the latest delivery
and engagement technologies are
opening new opportunities for the
presentation of content, and since
sport has always been a major driver
of innovation in television and media,
this year we are dedicating Sunday's
Platform Futures strand to sport. The
stream looks at how new technology
is pushing boundaries for live sports
coverage; the increasing importance
of fan engagement; and the
phenomenon of 'alternative sports
formats' like Twenty20 cricket and
Rugby 7s, which provide exciting and
lucrative alternatives to traditional
competitions. It will also examine the
unprecedented growth of eSports,
and the exponential opportunities
for broadcasters in a market that is
now pushing towards the half-billion
dollar size.
Sparking Change
One thing that hasn't changed
in our industry is the constant

innovation; it's still full of people
with bright ideas who can create new
techniques and the technologies to
support them. IBC has always strived
to help new companies find a place
in our community, and this year we
are trying a more proactive approach
with the IBC Startup Forum. Working
with a specialist agency, Honeypot
Media, we will bring together startup
and scaleup businesses, investors
and media houses, with a Deal Room
as well as networking areas and a
seminar programme. The goal is to
take the best new ideas from a spark
of invention to full fruition.
Also new this year is the
C-Tech Summit: two days of
specialist
presentations
and
debates, presented on the same
behind-closed-doors basis as the
Leaders' Summit. The event will
provide technological debate at
a strategic level, aiming to help
C-level
executives
understand
the implications for business
transformation. This year we are
tackling two topics: a threat and an
opportunity. On Friday we will look
at cyber-security, and on Saturday
it will be the possibilities of 5G
and persistent, universal very high
speed connectivity. Building on the
incredible achievement of last year's

IP Interoperability Zone, this year we
are presenting the IP Showcase to
show how far we have come in just
a year. IP is no longer 'the future' real-time IP for production, playout
and contribution is a practical,
flexible, efficient reality that is
rapidly taking hold in mainstream
broadcast operations. The IP
Showcase will offer demonstrations,
real-world scenarios and education
sessions, showing the full potential of
IP workflows.
Golden Ticket
Fifty years is a great achievement
and of course we will be recognising
it in several ways throughout the
show. We're particularly proud to
introduce a new charitable venture
supporting the Friendship Sports
Centre and the Edwin van der Sar
Foundation, two excellent local
charities that provide support
through sport for disadvantaged and
disabled children. If you want to play
football against former Ajax players
in our Saturday night Big Match, bid

But the most important way we can
celebrate IBC's golden anniversary
is by continuing to be the leading
global forum where the real issues of
the industry are discussed and new
strategies developed.
