The IBC of 'Gin and Joints'
MC Patel, CEO of Emotion Systems, shares a few thoughts on audio-specific
workflows and a sound recipe to enjoy the Amsterdam experience...

I

was reading the Devoncroft report
and noted a quote that read: "We
want as fine-grained media services as
possible... it's very common to have a
company say 'we do it all'... we can QC
the video, transcode it, caption alight
it, normalise the audio... What we don't
want to do is feed things into a giant
vertically scaled monolith process
that does the whole thing...that's not
modular and does not give us the
flexibility that we desire."
And that got me thinking about
choices and why we make them. Whilst
in Amsterdam, I wouldn't drink my gin
in the same place as one might look
for joints.
What I love about Amsterdam is
that they serve their gin completely
differently from the usual G&T. As
for the joints - that's a totally far
out experience, as I'm sure most
people who visit Amsterdam will
know. Audio from Emotion can be an

fanciest cocktail of workflows.

Many routine and mundane tasks
that take up time in the edit suite
can and should be automated! Engine
automates your manual and repetitive
tasks such as loudness, track mapping,
adding audio tracks, removing tracks,
inserting audio, replacing audio, Dolby
encode, decode, and more. As you
know, those tasks would normally be
done using edit software functions,
which would require an import of
the file (decoding video) and then an
operator would execute those tasks

using the facilities of the edit suite or
using plug-ins. The process involves
loading the file, manually working on
the file, and exporting the files.
Engine can do those for you. And you
can use your time for creative work
instead. One post facility we work with
recently switched over to using Engine
for 16 workflows. And that Engine
services 10 edit suites!

They no longer need 10 operators, 10
plug-ins, and 10 edit suites to get the
job done. Those editors can be doing
more creative and valuable work.
