Choosing the right tripod system to cover a range of lenses

echnological advancements in
cameras and camera accessories,
in recent years, have resulted in
videographers and cinematographers
having more choices than ever when
deciding what gear to take on a shoot.
Shooters also consider several
aspects of the production when
choosing what tripod system will
cover the range of payloads used, as
it is likely they will use several size
lenses and accessories to capture the
shots required. Quick and efficient
tripod setup is needed in each unique
instance while reliability is imperative.
Cornerstone
Miller's new CompassX series,
announced at the show, is designed
with speed, balance and strength as
its cornerstone. Offering five models
to choose from - CX2, CX6, CX8, CX10
and the CX18, all models come with
CB PLUS™. The inherent wide payload
range of CB PLUS provides maximum
flexibility and speed of setup,
when switching cameras or adding
accessories. The robust construction
of the CompassX guarantees a long,
low maintenance service-life and low
cost of ownership.
The CX2 and CX6 claim a payload

range of 0-8kg and 0-12kg
respectively, 15+0 positions of
counterbalance and 3+0 pan-andtilt drag positions with a 75mm ball
levelling mounting base for lighter rigs
where portability is important. Where
more fluid drag is required, the CX8
and CX10 both support 15+0 positions
of counterbalance, 5+0 drag positions
and 0-12kg payload range. The CX8
comes with a 75mm ball levelling
mounting base while the CX10 comes
with a 100mm ball levelling mounting
base. The models top out with the
CX18, which features a 0-16kg range,
5+0 positions pan-and-tilt of drag and
100mm ball levelling mounting base.
Counterbalance Plus
The new CompassX series
incorporates Miller's patented
CB PLUS enabling technology,
which
takes
traditional
counterbalancing a step forward
over traditional counterbalance
systems.
All
five
models
feature 16 positions (15+0) of
counterbalance for fine, rapid
adjustment and the side loading
base plate enables fast and easy
mounting and alighting of camera
rigs.

Counterbalance
is
used
to
counteract the weight of the camera
rig when tilting, rendering the camera
rig weightless during the shoot. The
objective is to find the right settings
quickly, say after a lens change. The
amount of counterbalance force
required depends on the weight of
the rig and the location of its centre
of gravity. If the counterbalance force
is too strong, then the rig will spring
back and counterbalance should be
set to a lower step. If it's too light, the
rig will drop forward or backwards, in
which case counterbalance should be
increased.
CB PLUS has eight steps on the
dial to go through to find the
closest position, then the CB PLUS

switch enables fine tuning of the
counterbalance after a rough CB
position has been found. Employing
the latest counterbalance technologies
means that this is one less thing the
shooter has to worry about.
Support System
The CompassX series has been fitted
with a side loading base plate enabling
fast and easy mounting and alighting
of camera rigs. All models come with
the standard #1204 camera plate.
Euro and mini euro camera plates
may be used, using an optional sliding
platform that fits in place of the #1024
camera plate.
CompassX will be offered in a number
of systems including variety of tripods
and bags to suit every application.
The Solo 75 and Toggle tripods suit
CX2, CX6 and CX10 fluid heads. The
Solo 75 is a spreader-less lightweight
tripod for shooters on the go. The
Toggle is a well proven workhorse and
comes in on-ground and above-ground
spreaders.
In the 100mm range, CX10 and
CX18, Solo 100, Sprinter II and Toggle
tripods will be offered. Sprinter
II is a patented dual lock system
designed to operate the tripod stages
independently or in unison. The locks
are located just below waist height
eliminating the need to bend down
to close the lower locks. Sprinter II
comes with ground spreader or midlevel spreader.
Strength & Durability
The CompassX series is designed for
strength and durability. The series
poses standard features to suit most
applications, as well as distinguishing
characteristics to each model. The
set of fluid heads in this five-option
series deliver on Miller's "right feel"
and are backed by a three-year
warranty promise that videographers
and cinematographers have come to
expect.
