P continues to be at the centre of
the broadcast evolution. Increased
adoption across the workflow and by
more and more organisations, driven
by the delivery of increased flexibility
and dependability in broadcast, media
and entertainment.
For broadcast, the ubiquitous nature
of IP, the cost savings it can bring, and
the flexibility it delivers to previously
rigid infrastructures, means that the
transition to full adoption is gaining
momentum - from live contribution
and the studio, to post-production and
delivery. This upswing is particularly
evident in the delivery of content,
not just to people's TVs, but into
their lives, with viewers ever more
demanding and wanting to receive
content anywhere, on any device, and
whenever they want it.
Network Infrastructure
IP is enabling organisations to move
away from the reliance on proprietary
technology and rather use the existing
network infrastructure to transport
data, video and audio across the
broadcast workflow. The telecoms
and large networking companies
have continuously invested billions
in research enabling them to bring
products and knowledge to market
that ultimately all organisations can
take advantage of - especially in
broadcast.
One of the strongest use cases for
the successful adoption of IP within the

industry - and the benefits it enables,
such as improved efficiencies, lower
cost, and more flexibility, is IP based
high performance KVM (keyboard,
video, and mouse) technology. KVM is
not a new technology by any means,
but over the last few years its use of
IP has really delivered benefits for
broadcast.
Used across the workflow, from
outside broadcast trucks and studio
control, to the post production
suite, IP-based KVM, such as the
range of solutions developed and
deployed by Adder Technology, allows
broadcasters to switch and extend
beyond HD video signals in real-time
with no loss of quality and no latency.
It brings added efficiency, reliability
and comfort to operations, allowing
the physical computers to be removed
from the operating environment and
stored securely in a server room, be
it a few doors away or in a different
building completely. More than that,
IP-based KVM transforms a single
screen into a portal into a number of
computers, quickly and effectively.
Server Control
In the gallery, for example, KVM's
extension capabilities mean that
machines can be located outside
the room - more often than not,
they are rack-mounted in a
centralised location, such
as a server room. Not only
does this free up space and

excess heat
and noise from
the control space, it also
extends the life and performance
of the machines themselves as
server rooms are climate controlled.
Operators can access the machines
required by using a single keyboard or
mouse with an experience the same as
if they were sitting at the machine.
While in an outside broadcast
application, switching technology
can be used to enable staff to easily
switch between and manage streams.
Operators need to monitor video
feeds, preview and ensure the quality
of shots, guarantee the playback
capabilities and transmit the feedback
to the studio or main truck that
is controlling the broadcast. KVM
technology gives OB operators the
ability to control the equipment that
performs these tasks by extending and
switching video signals without loss of
quality or performance in what is often
very limited space.
