Embracing Change
Didier Tymen, Vice-President of EMEA Sales at Newtec, discusses the opportunities and
challenges in the MENA broadcast market, and how broadcasters can ensure their
operations are future-proof, while minimising OPEX...
InBroadcast: What are your
expectations from the MENA
broadcast industry in 2016?
Didier Tymen: From mobile Fast
News Gathering (FNG) to fixed,
high-quality HD content exchanges,
broadcast
transmission
formats
and delivery methods are evolving
continuously. The adoption of new
standards aimed at a better user
experience drive broadcasters to
prepare their infrastructure for
the next evolution: higher quality
video channels - for example, the
introduction of new codec standards
including HEVC and high resolution
formats such as 4K Ultra HD - a
continuous increase in the amount
of available content, and the
consumption of content on different
devices with varying resolutions.
Broadcasters are also under
pressure to get premium content and
advertisements on air faster than ever
before. The increasing consumption
of content on any device, at any time,
at any place, forces broadcasters
to exchange content in various,
sometimes multiple, formats across
different
transmission
channels,
including OTT, IPTV, high-quality HD,
low-quality mobile, around the world,
and in many different time zones.
This is combined with increased price

pressure and pressure on efficiency in
both the ground and space segments,
leading to a growing need to reduce
OPEX.
InB: What is Newtec doing to
help broadcasters overcome these
challenges?
DT: Newtec's broadcast solutions
address DTH challenges by providing
the latest modulator technologies,
with bandwidth efficiency and reducing
expenses for broadcasters among our
top priorities. For instance, for the
DTH market, Equalink 3 is a linear and
non-linear pre-distortion technology
designed to compensate for the effects
of distortions caused by the satellite's
filters and amplifiers. The additional
throughput this provides equates to
up to 15% more TV channels in a DTH
carrier.
Technologies like Newtec's Clean
Channel Technology and the new DVBS2X standard also bring considerable
bandwidth gains. The DVB-S2X
standard, released in February
2014, enables very cost-effective
HD and 4K transmissions through
optimal MODCOD schemes, without
compromising on availability and
reliability. In comparison with DVB-S2,
DVB-S2X results in an efficiency gain
of between 15% and 30% in a typical

distribution network (including DTH),
increasing up to 51% in selected
contribution networks. This exceeds
the results from proprietary systems
available today.
Improvements
include
smaller
roll-offs, advanced filtering of
satellite carriers, and increased
granularity in MODCOD schemes. It
also features higher order modulation
(64/128/256APSK) support, linear
and non-linear MODCODs, better
implementation of MODCODs and
wideband support, as well as very low
signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) support
for mobile applications, channel
bonding, and additional standard
scrambling sequences to mitigate
co-channel-interference.
The DVB-S2 multistream feature
allows users to aggregate multiple
video transport streams into one
satellite
carrier,
for
example,
supporting multi-camera contributions
to a central studio. This avoids the
need for expensive outside broadcast
(OB) vans for video production, instead
allowing remote video production at
the receiving studio only.
All of these technologies are
embedded in Newtec's modulators,
like the M6100, with DVB-S2X available
via a simple software upgrade.
InB: In addition to reducing OPEX,
what else should broadcasters be
making a priority in order to ensure
success in the current marketplace?
DT: For success, broadcasters must
embrace the multiservice era. In a
multiservice network, there are three
key capabilities that need to co-exist
in one system: flexibility, scalability,
and efficiency. It is based on a single
and future-proof all-IP transport
layer, independent of the underlying
network layers. It supports video,
voice, data, and broadband services
on a single infrastructure and space
segment, while different broadcast
linear and non-linear workflows can
run simultaneously through shared
infrastructure, operating staff and
space segment. This instantly reduces

the level of CAPEX and OPEX, and
increases business flexibility.
Our solution to this is Newtec
Dialog - a single scalable, flexible
multi-service IP-based platform for
Multiservice Broadcast (MSBC). With
such a platform, broadcasters' OPEX
and CAPEX challenges are addressed,
while ensuring they remain agile, to
enable new satellite services in an
ever-changing world. In addition to
efficiency, scalability, and flexibility,
Newtec Dialog enables the automation
of broadcast workflows, and effective
usage of available hardware and
bandwidth resources. An intelligent
resource scheduling and workflow
automation engine reduces costs,
saves time, reduces operational
failures, and allows broadcasters to
rapidly enable new services as the
market evolves.
InB: Away from broadcast,
what other areas should Service
Providers be looking to invest in?
DT: The other area we expect to see
continued growth is in high-throughput
satellite (HTS). The many HTSs on
the horizon will bring enormous
opportunities for operators and
service providers, with the demanding
high-end mobility market set to enjoy
some of the most dramatic benefits.
For the last few years, cruise
ships, super yachts, oil and gas rigs,
and government vessels have been
pushing the limits of existing satellite
platforms. With thousands of users
onboard, some of these vessels are like
floating cities, consuming hundreds of
megabits of bandwidth as they move
around the world.
Newtec Dialog's upcoming 1.3
mobility release will address this
demand, with new further supporting
features, including DVB-S2X on the
forward link, Layer 2 bridging, and
a protocol to enable communication
with antenna control units for beam
switching.
