T he younger generations of viewers tend to avoid watching TV as traditional, broadcast shows. This means that the audience for news cannot grow - instead it is aging and slowly decreasing for natural reasons. Beyond siloed newscreation environments Of course, most broadcasters today have dedicated TV, radio and online teams. Typically, the first focus will be on primetime news and the latter play a supporting role in news production, as well as being responsible for taking care of new or future online distribution channels. The reality of this, unfortunately, is that it is quite common that communication between online and TV teams is poor. The natural result of this is that multiple people work on the same news topic - sometimes without knowing of each other's existence. The end result is duplicated work and different outputs. This duplication of effort and inconsistent news narrative can only be avoided by having all teams working in a single environment, where users can see the work of other members across the team in real-time and use this information to inform and improve their own work. Such an environment would suit individual workflows whether for TV, radio or online. Where stories exist, the solution would also display when it is planned for broadcast and for which channel. Story Bins - at the Core of Modern Workflows Working directly with its customers, ANNOVA Systems recently introduced the concept of the "Story Bin", which collects all relevant story data to improve workflow cooperation between the teams and connect multiple departments in a united cross-media newsroom. The Story Bin sits at the core of a story-centric workflow and serves multiple needs at the same time. In practical terms, the story bin is a collection of story elements from disparate sources, e.g. agency feeds, contacts, links or media files. It contains a list of assigned tasks or allocated resources, such as the ENG team or NLE suite. It also tracks all changes made by the members of each team, as well as making it possible to revert it to an earlier state at any time. In providing a broader view, each story bin contains the links to all instances of the story as they have appeared on TV, radio, online or social media. This allows journalists to review up-to-the minute story coverage just as easily as reviewing archive material, if needed, from months or years earlier.
