Hybrid QC Solution
Hybrid QC offers a long awaited integrated quality control

ile-based quality control (QC)
has changed a lot over the years.
In the early days of broadcast, QC
was entirely manual. Over the last
decade, automation became a gamechanger for the broadcast community,
especially in terms of speeding up QC
workflows. Yet, lately, there's been a
shift in the approach to QC. Leading
auto QC companies are evolving to
hybrid QC platforms, which enable
broadcast operators to perform auto
and eyeball (i.e., manual) QC checks
in parallel from a single platform. As a
result, a broadcast facility's entire QC
policy can be implemented in a single
solution.
The main reason for change is that
the industry is realizing auto QC is not
a complete solution. Special effects
that are added to video may cause
an automated, file-based QC solution
to detect those effects as artefacts
in the video frame, also known as
false positives. In this case, there

is a need for manual intervention
to understand these anomalies and
then take appropriate corrective
measures. Some of these aberrations
may intentionally be introduced as
special effects, and therefore, need no
correction.
With automated QC solutions, false
negatives are also a concern. These
occur when errors that need to be
reported are ignored by auto QC
systems. Moreover, there are often
critical issues in the video or audio
stream that need to be reported but
the technology is not available to

address them. In this case, operators
need to intervene manually to
detect problems, such as lip sync,
which automated QC solutions alone
cannot identify. The best way that
broadcasters can ensure a superior
quality of experience is by relying
on a next-generation, file-based QC
solutions that uses a combination of
auto and manual QC techniques.
