broadcast transport technology...

I

n years gone by broadcast
engineering was undertaken by a
select few highly skilled people who
understood end-to-end how images
of actors, sportsmen and presenters
got from in front of the camera to
your TV at home. We all had only one
TV in those days. And there were far
fewer TV channels too. Fast forward
from 525/625 Line NTSC, PAL and
SECAM to today's 4K-SDI, Multiscreen
OTT
interactive
viewing. The amount of data
is now enormous and the
delivery mediums are rich
and varied and are all being
used in unison to provide the
modern experience. The technical
requirements for real-time interactive
multi-screening from the comfort of
your own sofa are substantial.
Bluebell based close to London has
come up with an IP Gateway product

range called 'Edgware'. This is
effectively a bridge between current
broadcast type signals and the IP
world. This will allow BNC and XLR
technology to be transported over IP
networks. The user interface remains
the same but the transport technology
is new, so allowing existing equipment
to be repurposed for IP delivery.

Mux/Demux unit,
the BC390

Our new Camera Back unit is now
fully in production. The BCX-760 is
designed to convert a basic camcorder
into a rackable professional camera
channel. It slots in between the camera
body and the battery. Neat, compact
and very powerful...
12G-SDI or 4K UHD TV is
commonplace. So many productions
are now shot in 4K even if they don't
get broadcast in that format. All the
camera manufacturers are in this
market space and storage is getting
bigger in a smaller physical
size. We have come
up
with
several
products for this. As
always with Bluebell
it's
Fibre
Optic
transport. We have a
straight 12G-SDI to Fibre
Converter range, the BN365. This will
convert a single channel of 12G-SDI on

one BNC to fibre and back.
We are launching our Mux/Demux
unit, the BC390. This receives 4 x
3G-SDI and serialises it to 1 x 12G-SDI
on both a BNC and a Fibre Port. It will
also do the reverse. This is the first of
a range of modules that will up/down
and cross convert HD-SDI, 3G-SDI,
6G-SDI and 12G-SDI.
It is aimed squarely at the 12G
market but it can be implemented in
other ways. If you have a HD or 3G-SDI
CWDM network and you are running
out of wavelengths - using the BN390
puts 4 x 3G-SDI onto one wavelength.
This allows you to quadruple your
payload with very little extra cost. Neat.
