NAB Show 2015
The latest solutions from AJA for professional production, post-production,
and broadcast markets will be demonstrated at NAB Show...

A

s international ﬁlm, broadcast,
and AV professionals assemble
this week in Las Vegas, for the annual
NAB show, AJA Video Systems is
outﬁtting its booth with end-to-end
affordable, powerful, and practical
HD, 2K, 4K, and HFR 4K workﬂow
demonstrations. Its latest solutions
for the professional production, postproduction, and broadcast markets will
be featured. Visitors to the booth can
see a diverse range of AJA products in
various workﬂows, including the KONA
and Io lines of capture and playback
cards, and Thunderbolt devices, the
Ki Pro family of digital recording
devices, KUMO video routers, FS frame
synchronisers, Mini-Converters and
the new, groundbreaking CION 4K/
UHD/2K/HD production camera, which
began shipping earlier this year.
Offering unparalleled connectivity,
AJA CION is capable of shooting at 4K/
UltraHD and 2K/HD resolutions. Incamera recording directly to the Apple
ProRes family of codecs, including
12-bit ProRes 444, enables incredible
image quality capture to cost-effective
AJA Pak SSD media, at up to 4K/60p,
and offers compatibility with a wide
range of post production applications.
CION can also output AJA Raw at up
to 4K 120 fps via 4 3G-SDI or up to
4K 30 fps via Thunderbolt. Made from
a lightweight, strong magnesium
alloy and featuring a contoured
suede shoulder pad, the camera is
comfortable to operate.
CION features a 4K sized CMOS
sensor with electronic global shutter
and integrated optical low pass

ﬁlter/infrared cut ﬁlter combined to
produce stable, colour accurate
images, without moiré
patterning. It has more
simultaneous
on-set
monitoring outputs than
any other camera in its
class, alongside a builtin conﬁdence monitor
and LAN browser video
tap. Users can choose
a combination of 2 4K/
UltraHD and 3 2K/HD or 8
2K/HD, check each camera
feed in multi-cam setups through
an integrated LAN connection, and
monitor remaining recording time, all
in tandem. The unique LAN port and
embedded webserver facilitate full
remote conﬁguration and control, so
users can quickly and easily setup and
control or gang control multiple CION
cameras. Third-party lens mounts are
also available for CION, which enable
the use of Canon EF/FD, Nikon G/F,
ARRI Bayonet, Panavision, and B4
Lens systems.
Delivering on its commitment to
address user-requested features and
improvements for CION, AJA is also
showcasing the latest ﬁrmware for
the camera at NAB Show. By popular
demand, the v1.1 software update
released in February increased the
Exposure Index (EI) values to EI 320,
EI 500, EI 800, and EI 1000, and
offered improved highlight handling
capabilities. Field-upgradeable and
recommended for all CION users, CION
ﬁrmware can easily be uploaded to
the camera via a built-in Web UI with

Additional products that AJA is
spotlighting in its NAB Show booth
include, the new products announced
at the show, recently released SDI
Mini-Converters, and the FS family
of frame synchronisers/converters,
with powerful real-time broadcast
scaling technology options and Madi
capabilities. In addition, six partner
companies are displaying their AJApowered solutions for a variety of
workﬂows in the developer area of
AJA's stand.
Particularly applicable to the
sports broadcast market, AJA is also
exhibiting TruZoom, a combination of
software and hardware that delivers
real-time HD Region of Interest
(ROI) extraction from 4K cameras,
including the AJA CION, and the Vision
Research Phantom Flex4K. CION is
capable of outputting frame rates
up to 120 fps as either 4K or UHD
from its 4 3G-SDI outputs as AJA

Raw. AJA's Corvid Ultra hardware, in
conjunction with TruZoom software,
can take the AJA Raw output and
replay it at up to 60 fps for smooth
slo-mo, and very high quality region
of interest scaling. TruZoom further
offers instant keyframed playback, at
either HD or 4K resolutions, even from
high frame rate sources, driven by a
straightforward UI, or familiar joystick
controller.
