NAB Show 2015: Remote Control
and More...

T

he 2015 National Association of
Broadcasters (NAB) convention
looks to be one of the best attended
and most inﬂuential - in terms of the
future direction of how audio and video
is captured, processed, and delivered -
the industry has seen in years. Indeed,
the 2015 NAB Show could attract more
than the 98,000 visitors that made the
journey to Las Vegas last year.
Advances in camera sensors,
Internet protocol (packet-based)
ﬁle sharing and distribution, remote
collaborative editing and globally
networked workgroups, and remote
machine diagnostics and control will
all be touted in the many exhibition
ﬂoor booths, as vendors look to entice
broadcasters to make the move to
complete ﬁle-based, high-resolution,
multiplatform operations, not just
islands within a production facility.
4K Acquisition
Single 35 mm sensor cameras from
Blackmagic Designs, Canon, Grass
Valley, JVC, Panasonic, and Sony will
be on display for those looking for true
4K (4096 × 2160 lines of resolution)
acquisition. These images are then
broadcast at Ultra-High-Deﬁnition
(UHD, at 3840 × 2160 lines) resolution
to conserve bandwidth. High-speed
cameras from FOR-A and Vision
Research, to name a few, will also be
on hand.
UAVs
And let's not forget drones, or
unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs),
which, now that the FCC has proposed
rules on the use of such remote
control camera systems for closed,
professional productions and news
gathering, should see a lot of activity
among attendees within the inaugural
"Aerial Robotics and Drone Pavilion",

new exhibit area, located in the
South Upper Hall of the Las Vegas
Convention Center, will feature dozens
of aerial robotics companies, a ﬂying
cage, a demonstration area with
seating, and daily education sessions.
The Pavilion is sponsored by DJI, a
dedicated provider of unmanned
aerial systems and media acquisition
technology.
Exhibitors participating in the
Pavilion include DJI, Canon, Amimon,
DSLR Pros, XFly Systems, TeraLogics,

Unmanned Vehicle University.

At NAB Show, Sony will discuss a
new industry initiative around its
Networked Media Interface that is
designed to help the industry make
the move faster, with more familiarity.
Sony's Networked Media Interface is
an AV-over-IP interface for IP-based
networking, that provides low latency
transport of UHD/4K video, audio,
reference, metadata, and control data.

more attention this year, thanks to a dedicated pavilion sponsored by DJI

IP Migration
For the past two years conversations
have surrounded the industry's
migration to an Internet Protocol
(IP) future, whereby audio and video
clips are sent, and received, as data
packets, complete with associated
metadata and other related material.
This allows broadcasters to send
whatever resolution (HD or 4K) and
bit rate they choose, although they
might have to change their entire
infrastructure.

offer the ability to have SDI signals
in and IP out, uses time stamping
to gunlock cameras together, and
reduces the number of coaxial cables
required signiﬁcantly.
This timestamping is critical to
remote operation, which major sports
networks like ESPN and NBC Sports
are now leveraging to cost effectively
cover multi-venue events, like the
X-Games or Olympic Games, with fewer

be shot in Brazil, for example, and be
sent over IP to ESPN's Stamford Conn.
facility, where highlight reels and full
programs are created (and regional
commercials and announcers added),
and then broadcast, all within a matter
of seconds. Thanks to the maturation
of IP, remote operations are the future
of live production.
The ﬁrst 10 companies supporting
Sony's effort to promote the
Networked Media Interface include
Altera Corporation, Cisco Systems,
Evertz, Imagine Communications,
Juniper Networks, Macnica Americas,
Matrox Electronics Systems, Rohde &
Schwarz DVS, Vizrt, and Xilinx. More
are expected to join at NAB Show.
HEVC Compression
New improvement in compression,
that is MPEG-5 or HEVC, will also
be evident on the show ﬂoor - from
companies like Ateme, Elemental
Technologies, Ericsson, Germany's
Fraunhofer Institute, and Harmonic -
which is now being used by IP-based
services, like Netﬂix, to send movies
in UHD quality to IP-enabled devices.
No traditional OTA broadcaster can do
that today.
Taken as a whole, the past visions
of a ﬂexible, ﬁle-based future that
includes everyone involved in a
live broadcast or video production,
whether they are located right next
to each other or across the globe, will
be closer to reality at this year's NAB
Show.
