Canare: Maintaining
Excellent Connections

discusses the latest cabling products and trends in the
European sector...
InBroadcast: Can you give us
a brief overview of what we can
expect in the next 6-12 months
within your sector?
Tomasz Kolaczyk:
Undoubtedly
if there were no Covid-19 the answer
could be much easier. Unfortunately
nowadays it's really difficult to predict
was is going to happen during the next
months. However, Canare customers
are to be found in three main industry
sectors: broadcast; audio recording;
and events.
The first two sectors have remained
more or less stable, although during
the lockdown there was a total
lack of work for the OB van crews.
However as the broadcast news
thrives on the reporting from world
tragedies, one may be forgiven for
saying that the worse the news, the
better for TV news. Dealing with the
Covid-19 situation has seen much
engineering creativity in terms of
remote production. All kinds of video
communications, including those
from mobile 4G/5G networks are
extremely useful for this kind of news
production. While unfortunately that's
not a good sign for a cable companies
like Canare, we are nonetheless
talking more and more about remote,
wireless production even though no
cables needed at certain phases of the
transmission chain.
As for the third industry sector, that
of events, it remains one of our most
important customers. One still needs
cables to produce live events. Since
Covid-19 hit, the whole events industry
sector is stagnant.
Facing almost no events, the industry
is struggling with its strongest crises
ever. Next to no jobs at all. There
were a number of demonstrations
in Germany organised by all kind of
events companies and organisations
begging for government help.
Honestly, I fear there is little left to
do apart from seeking government
help. The second wave of infections
coming could kill the industry. So, that
also is not a good sign for the cabling
infrastructure companies.

The 12G coax
cable range has
been extended

InB: Did opening of Canare Europe
changed the brand recognition?
TK: Canare is a well-known
worldwide brand for many years. The
company was established in 1970
and became famous from its flexible
and colourful microphone cables in
1977. Canare started to grow mostly
in the Asian region but later on in the
USA as well. In Europe Canare cables
were recognised mostly from the US
market penetration. With the opening
of Canare Europe in 2017 we decided
to put a lot of effort towards making
the brand more recognisable and the
products easily accessible. We opened
a warehouse in Germany in order
to provide faster delivery times to a
growing number of users and dealers.
For most of the products we offer
between a three-day to a two-week
delivery time, which is one of our
true successes for the European
market. During past two years we
were able to achieve better than
twice the sales volume compared
to previous years. We introduced
our SMPTE cables and connectors
to all existing Studio/OB Camera
users. We are now firmly part of
the European Broadcast Family.
InB: What challenges did you
face when designing / launching
the product / services?
TK: The major issue is to find
customers for your new products.
We are living in fast changing times

where, regrettably, very
often technical perfection is
a secondary consideration.
For the engineers, who
are
seeking
technical
perfection, this is obviously
something
unacceptable,
yet the customer is waiting
for the solution now. In let
say two years they will no
longer be interested.
The Canare design centre
is located in Japan. In
the pursuit of technical
perfection our engineers
are designing new cables
and connectors. Some of them are
niche products, some of them really
became a hit, like our 12G coax cable
L-5.5CUHD. It is no doubt one of the
best on the market with worldwide
recognition. Now we are introducing
our best 12G mobile/flexible cable,
L-5.5CUHWS.
We hope it will repeat the success of
the installation cable.
Canare Electric in Japan is also
working closely with its subsidiaries
redesigning products to meet the local
requirements. One such example are
CPR (for Europe) or Plenum (for USA)
non-flammable cables.
There is still demand for the coax
cables, and that's a good sign. But
there is no denying that the world

is going in the direction of IP. So, no
doubt, the biggest challenge is to
follow all those changes and develop
the right product at the right time.
InB: Which territories do you think
will show particular interest?
TK: I am responsible for the wider
European territory so obviously I
can concentrate of this area. As I
mentioned before our L-5.5 cable
is well known Europe-wide. We also
have a number of customers in Israel.
We hope to repeat same success with
flexible version of L-5.5. Apart from
video cables Canare is famous for
our SMPTE 304/311M products. We
are the only company offering SMPTE
connectors and cables. That's the
biggest benefit - you can get a readymade cable from one source. Most
of the European countries admire
this advantage and we have plenty
of happy customers in Italy, Poland,
Germany, Belgium, Belarus and many
other countries. At present the UK is
our weakest area. So, we are aiming to
further highlight our presence to the
UK market in terms of SMPTE cables
and connectors. Our other products
such as video patchbays are pretty well
known in UK.
InB: Can you advise on your ideal
market for these products?
TK: TV studios, OB vans, rental
houses and the permanent football
stadium installations are our end
users. We can offer full spectrum of
connectivity products for all those
areas. SMPTE and 12G connectivity
solutions are our major products.
For SMPTE camera cables, also in
coax world, we are the only company
offering
complete
connectivity
solutions, from a single BNC source
connector via cable, to patchpanels to
the final destination with the lowest
possible signal loss.
I think it's worth it to use reliable
products from one manufacturer!
