Any company that publishes content
on diverse platforms has seen the
complexity of content distribution
grow exponentially, but if rights
management is centralized on one
system for both linear and nonlinear
distribution, they can keep the
overview and any possible issues are
flagged. Information entered in the
early stages of the creation of the
programme is accessible and can be
reused all along the product's life
cycle. This also implies that everybody
in every department is working on the

However, to keep track of rights,
underlying rights and restrictions,
and to be able to take quick editorial

Say you want to repurpose content,
slice and dice and recompose it, put it
on an on-demand platform, or stream

is some restriction on some part of the
content, a royalty contract attached to

Typically, many of a broadcaster's
internal productions or co-productions

are a concatenation of scenes, all
with their own set of rights and
restrictions. Some scenes are live,
others preproduced; some come from
archives, others are purchased. Each
part of the production can be subject
to different rights; rights can even be
restricted to a number of frames.
Often, these rights are managed by
several legacy stand-alone systems,
none of which sees the whole picture,
resulting in inefficient, redundant and
risky operations.
In WHATS'ON it is possible to add
segmentations on the product,
with restrictions and metadata
inherited or directly added on the
level of the constituent extracts. The
segmentations allow the users, for
instance, to automatically create clips
for fast publication online.
The extracts can carry their own
press descriptions, cast information,
copyright sheets and images. Users
immediately know whether the
underlying rights have already been
cleared and if not, which clearance
cost (residual, royalty or flat fee)
will apply. The system is also used
for monitoring royalty statuses and
informs the users about any additional
costs.
