Monitoring the Picture
There is no respite in the upwards rise in vision standards as 4K
and HDR drive the bar ever higher. Contributing Editor Andy Stout
reports on the latest developments...

O

ne of the consequences of the rise
in OTT and the pivot towards the
likes of Amazon and Netflix has been
the increased role the SVOD companies
are starting to play in setting base
line standards for productions. We've
been here before, of course; many
will remember the role that Discovery
played in setting the standards for HD
during its own introduction phase, and
the rule seems to be that whoever is
commissioning the most content gets
to specify what it wants. And with
its billions of dollars and hundreds
of commissions, Netflix in particular
pretty much gets to call what shots it
wants.
So, when it says that any of its Netflix
Originals have to be certified by Dolby
for Dolby Vision HDR grading and
>1000 cd/m2, a lot of people take a lot
of notice and this effectively becomes
the new benchmark. And it does so to
the extent that manufacturers like to
draw attention to the fact that their
monitor has made the list, as Canon
did with its 24-inch DP-V2420, 4K HDR
reference monitor a few months back.

the budgetary scale, monitors like

Indeed, there is a growing movement
to use mid-range and up consumer
displays (and sometimes even
televisions) for colour grading in
particular nowadays, many people
rationalising that they can often
have a greater coverage of the
DCI-P3 spectrum. LG's latest 32inch UHD 4K monitor announced
at CES, the 32UK950, can display
98% of DCI-P3 and comes in at
an impressive US$1300. It will be
available in October.

Over in the other main area of
the picture monitoring market, oncamera, the biggest news so far
this year has been less about the
