What's New In Lighting
and Portable Power

T

he six months since InBroadcast
last looked in detail at lighting
and portable power have seen a
respectable number of new product
introductions in both categories. This
was particularly evident in the Central
Hall of the April 2018 NAB Show in Las
Vegas where most of the camera and
lighting equipment exhibitors display
the latest additions to their product
ranges.
LEDs still dominate the studio
lighting business on the grounds of
energy efficiency, unless one happens
to be relying on the lights to heat a
studio as well as illuminate the talent.
In terms of portable power, lithiumion continues to be the preferred
battery technology so no big surprises
yet. For the longer term, one of several
alternative battery technologies well
worth tracking is the development
(by the Korea Advanced Institute of
Science & Technology) of sodiumion batteries using copper sulphide
anodes. Potential benefits include
lower material costs and longer more
useful life.
Lighting
Akurat's HP3A is an
on-camera LED panel
equipped with two sets
of
diodes,
warm
3200K
and
cold
5600K, and emitting
a flicker-free soft
light of up to 1,200
lumens. The device allows
adjustable brightness as well
as switching between tungsten and
daylight colour temperature.
Arri's SkyPanel Firmware 4 offers
10 new features for advanced control
including extended colour control, four
additional pre-programmed lighting
effects, x,y coordinate colour selection
via the onboard control panel, and
stage mode for smooth dimming to
zero in live audience applications.
SkyPanel Firmware 4 allows the user
to control individual light matrices via
new DMX modes. Each light matrix acts

as its own mini SkyPanel.
Cineo's Maverick remote phosphor
technology light delivers a volume
of illumination equal to a traditional
1K soft source, optimised for image
capture as well as other applications
that
demand
accurate
colour
rendering. As with Cineo's TruColor
HS and LS, interchangeable phosphor
panels produce a variety of colour
temperatures in one fixture. Extended
CRI for the Maverick is over 95 and the
lamp generates the same 160° beam
spread as HS and LS.
Dedolight offers LED fixtures in
five sizes. The DLED2.1 and DLED4.1
provide colour in tungsten, daylight
and bicolour versions. The DLED9.1
and DLED12.1 were designed for studio
application (daylight and tungsten),
but will also work in mobile, scenic
production. With the exception of
the DLED12.1, all the focusing LED
fixtures work using passive cooling.
The DLED4.1 is available as both a
mobile and studio version. The studio
version also features DMX control. The
DLED4.1 and DLED9.1 are
also available with DMX
controls. The DLED12.1
comes with DMX controls as
standard.
Frezzi's SunLight has a
575W HMI and new proprietary
directional focusing LED design
that adjusts the beam pattern
without the use of lenses or optical
shaping filters commonly used to
control LED beam pattern, both of
which reduces output. Using 5500K
LEDs and highly polished
internal reflectors, the
SunLight
captures
100% of the usable
LED light and
projects it where
needed. The beam
pattern is adjustable
with
a
precise
directional
focusing
control from its native
20 degree spot to a spread
flood.

Cineo's Maverick uses
remote phosphor technology

Kino Flo's new Celeb 850 LED
DMX family line now includes yoke
mounting and pole-operated versions.
These two models are designed with
built-in electronics mounted on the
centre of the fixtures which makes
them ideal for hanging in the studio.
One of the largest LEDs currently
available, the Celeb 850 measures
1140 x 660mm and is 150mm in depth.
The fixture puts out 1251 lux at three
metres, but only uses 600 watts of
power. All Celeb 850 models have the
same menu options, one white and
two colour menus with a Kelvin range
from 2500 to 9900K with full green/
magenta, gel, hue/saturation and RGB
colour control. Additional features
include presets, custom settings and
full range dimming without flicker or
colour shift. Light levels do not change
when selecting Kelvin settings. The
Celeb 850 also comes with standard
DMX and wireless DMX, and a 100-240
volt AC mains power input.
Ledgo's E116C is bi-colour LED on
a camera pad light claimed to deliver
a softer output than traditional oncamera units. Suitable for portrait
lighting or a single person interview
and can also be used for
product shots.
Mole Richardson's
Vari-Panel

is a 509 x 427
x 108mm deep
150W passive-cooled
variable colour light
source
weighing
6.62kg. Mains powered, it
has a 145 degree field angle
and incorporates 3200K, 2800K

and 5600K colour temperature presets
plus a custom-adjustable setting.
NanGuang's Luxpad 43 LED lighting
kit comes complete with accessories
ready for use in video production
and digital photography. The kit is
supplied with two Luxpad 43 heads
which give soft diffused lighting,
plus two CN-20FC heads which give
adjustable flood lighting through to
a more concentrated spot via built in
Fresnel focusing which controls the
beam between 15 and 55 degrees. All
four heads feature step-less dimming.
Adjustable colour temperature control
(3200 to 5600K) is provided at each
head. All lighting heads are equipped
and ready to use either by battery or
mains power. All batteries, charging
leads and mains cables are included.
The lighting kit is supplied with four
model L170 stands and two hand grips
for the Luxpad 43 heads. The complete
kit including stands and accessories is
supplied in a single custom fitted case.
Photon Beard's Solo kit is designed
to provide everything needed for
single subject lighting. It includes three
PB80 dimmable lamp heads with barn
doors and 5600K remote phosphor
disc, three floor stands, 98Wh
batteries and charger, and transit bag.
Portable Power
Anton Bauer's Cine series lithiumion batteries are designed to deliver
12 amps of continuous power for cine
style cameras. It includes an output
to power auxiliary accessories such as
monitors, lights, wireless receivers and
any other 14 volt accessory. A thermal
sensor checks for overheating and, if
necessary, prevents further charge
