In Broadcast - April 2018 - 61
61 www.inbroadcast.com | Vol: 8 - Issue 4 | April 2018 InSound Audio Mixing Desks Fox Studios in LA has upgraded its three AMS Neve DFC Gemini consoles to DFC3D - the latest incarnation of the digital mixing console designed specifically for multi-format film dubbing and post-production a range of enhancements and additional features for RIVAGE system users. Of particular interest to broadcast users will be 5.1 surround panning and monitoring, with two surround buses available for efficient international feed production. A broadcast Mix Minus function is also provided, allowing a specified source to be removed from a specified remote feed with a simple hands-on short-cut. The Version 2 firmware also allows the creation of two TWINLANe ring networks in one system, allowing the use of as many as 16 RPio series I/O units with up to 800 audio channels at 96kHz and 3000 input connections to the system. There is a new Portto-Port function that allows bridging between both the TWINLANe rings and additional Dante networks. Calrec Audio is set to unveil a major new product - 'Type R' at NAB. However, details remained under wraps as this edition of InBroadcast went to press. Also at the show, Calrec will give a U.S. debut to Brio 12, its compact, 12-fader audio mixer. Brio 12 has the same powerful feature set and mix capabilities as its larger sibling, Brio36, which has seen unrivalled success, states the company. Brio 12 meets the demand for a broadcast mixer that can be used in very tight spaces like small vans and compact control rooms, and at under 450mm (18-inches) wide it is slim enough to fit into standard racks or be stowed out of the way when not in use. Brio 12 is suitable for small-scale productions, or as a sub-mixer or backup mixer for larger productions. Inheriting a rich feature set and powerful surround capability from its larger sibling, Brio 12 removes the limitations on ambition and creativity imposed by mixers of comparable size and price-point. With 12 physical dual-layer faders for mixing live sources during broadcast, Brio 12 provides extra virtual faders via its user-friendly UI. With 48 input channels and the same buss count as the popular Brio36, the console has plenty of capacity for sub-mixes and VCA slaves. These capabilities also make it ideal for production environments requiring automated control over every fader. In related news, NBC Olympics, a A large-scale Allen & Heath dLive S Class digital mixing system managed the spectacular final of the national song contest, Anugerah Juara Lagu (Champion of Songs) cont'd... division of the NBC Sports Group, selected Calrec's Summa, Artemis Ray, and Brio digital audio consoles to provide seamless audio mixing for its production of the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, which took place in PyeongChang, South Korea last month. AMS Neve has released the DAWSYNC plug-in for the DFC3D console, providing an elegant and simple solution for Machine Control integration with Pro Tools. The plug-in provides instant lock from the Pro Tools timeline to the DFC3D automation so that audio, video, and console automation instantly roll together without any delay, and without complicated synchronisation setups. DAWSYNC also provides a virtual 9-pin interface for transport commands, track arming, and PEC/ Direct switching from the DFC3D to the DAW. The DAWSYNC plug-in connects to the DFC3D via Ethernet making installation simple and convenient and is already currently in use on major mix stages in the U.S. Allen & Heath now offers Dante Domain Manager support for its dLive and GLD digital mixing systems via the M-Dante audio networking card, further widening their use in install applications. All new Allen & Heath M-Dante cards will be supplied DDMready. Existing cards can be made DDM-ready by updating to V4 firmware, available from the Allen & Heath website. The M-Dante audio networking card can be fitted to any Allen & Heath dLive system or GLD mixer to provide a 64x64 Dante interface. Nic Beretta, Allen & Heath's Head of Product Marketing comments: "We always strive to make our products as integrated as possible within an installation. Dante Domain Manager is an excellent solution for many of our customers. As soon as we heard about it, we put things in motion to be among the first manufacturers to release V4 Dante firmware with DDM support." Following a recent major installation, Cumulus NYC's Stage 17, a live performance and broadcast studio at Cumulus's New York City cluster (WABC, WPLJ, WNSH, WNBM), is now using an Allen & Heath GLD-80 Digital Mixing System at FOH for its live audience mix, another GLD-80 to provide a stereo broadcast mix and six Allen & Heath ME-1 Personal Mixing Systems for on-stage artist monitoring. With its new audio systems, Stage 17 has hosted more than 100 live music broadcasts, interviews, fund raisers and other special events since March of 2017 with celebrities like Oliver Stone, Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert and Gavin DeGraw. Director of Engineering Dan Hirschl says, "Our goal for Stage 17 was to convert a large conference room into a live performance studio for use by the multiple Cumulus stations here in New York for a variety of events." Regarding the mixer choice for Stage 17, Hirschl says he had helped a colleague set up a Qu-16, a smaller Allen & Heath digital mixer. He noted, "It was very intuitive. I was able to figure it out and make it happen within fifteen minutes. Also, it didn't take a lot of work to get his mic sounding the way it should for broadcast. So, that experience was part of the reason we chose the GLD-80s for Stage 17. And I wanted the GLD's routing ability and expansion options." Radio Culleredo 101.2 FM, recently opted for AEQ IP technology And finally, in Spain, Radio Culleredo 101.2 FM, Culleredo (A Coruña) Council's radio station has recently opted for AEQ IP technology when renewing their audio mixing console. AEQ Capitol IP is an eight-fader console with IP connectivity and double phone-hybrid, based on a single module with 16 input and 16 output channels, incorporated into its core. Capitol IP is well suited to the needs of small to medium-sized stations, offering features such as automatic monitor cut, cough-cut, fader-start, signal control, interface signals for the automation of external devices, and external communications management.
