he following article provides an
update on lens and lens-related
products introduced to the broadcast
market since InBroadcast last reviewed
this category 12 months ago.
No sign yet of a grand rush from
4K to 8K production but anything
is possible in the countdown to
the 2020 Summer Olympics which
NHK will be broadcasting in 7680
x 4320 resolution. 8K poses great
opportunities for all broadcast
equipment manufacturers, not least
the bitrate reduction brigade. So what
is new or at least good in terms of
camera optics in the run up to the April
2018 NAB Show...
Angénieux's Optimo Ultra 12x is
a multi-format zoom lens for the
production market. Successor model
to the Optimo 24-290 and 28-340,
it has a new optical and mechanical
design and comes with the standard PL
mount lens. It is designed for extreme
shooting conditions and claims a
better sealed optical area than on its
predecessor, reducing dust inhale.
It can be used in a -20°C to +40°C
temperature range. The lens can be
configured to cover three different
formats: S35 (31.1mm diameter image
circle), U35 (34.6mm) and FF/VV
(Ø6.3mm).
Arri's Master Anamorphic lens
series, developed with Carl Zeiss, is
claimed to set a high standard for the
optical performance of anamorphic
lenses. Each lens has 15 iris blades.
Claimed capabilities include no visible
image drop at corners and no fatface-effect anamorphic distortion. The
28mm MA28 shares the T1.9 aperture
speed of all seven preceding Master
Anamorphics, making it suitable for
use in low-light and with shallow

CJ12ex4.3B is a
2/3-inch 4K lens

depth of field. The 180mm MA180 is a
compact design with a front diameter
of 95mm.
Canon's CJ12ex4.3B is this company's
first 2/3-inch 4K lens. A lightweight
portable wide-angle lens with 12x
zoom, its focal length is 4.3mm at the
wide end, enabling users to capture
wide-angle shots like car interiors.
Focal length extends to 52mm with full
zoom applied (104mm using the builtin 2x extender). Canon's 16-bit encoder
provides aberration correction on
start-up without initialisation. It also
provides positional information on
zoom, focus and iris. Three 20-pin
connectors allow virtual operation in
full servo mode when the lens is used
in a virtual system.

Cinescope's 28mm will be
joined by a 24mm and a 180mm

CMotion's Broadcast Camin is a
control interface designed to handle
focus, iris and zoom on any cine style

analogue connector is compatible
with Canon and Fujinon broadcast
controllers. Three motor ports allow
the use of digital motors from Arri
and Heden. Cforce motors can
also be used independently or
synchronised into a full
six motor combination
with fast single-button
calibration.
