The Rise Of IP-Based
KVM In Broadcast
Adder Technology's VP Sales APAC, Loki Ong, examines how KVM might
shape the broadcast control room of the future...

T

he broadcast industry is constantly
evolving, be it changes to viewer
behaviour, the introduction of new
technologies or shifting business
models. One of the most significant
shifts we have witnessed in recent
years is the move towards adopting IP
technology as a standard infrastructure
across the entire broadcast workflow.
IP provides a network suitable for
routing audio, video and USB around a
broadcast facility, and with the addition
of IP-based KVM businesses can add
flexibility, management and scalability
to their infrastructure.
The sophistication of IP technology,
the attitudes towards it and expertise
have matured and spread to such
a degree that the adoption rate
is speeding up exponentially. As
many broadcasters have already
proven, there are plenty of benefits
to
implementing
an
IP-based
infrastructure, but perhaps one of
the most useful and effective of
these is the enabling ability of high
performance IP-based KVM (keyboard,
video and mouse) technology.
IP-based KVM technology removes
the limitations of traditional KVM
equipment and brings real-time,
accurate video operation to all
areas of the broadcast operation
using ubiquitous IP infrastructures.
Gradually, more broadcasters are
using switching, extension and matrix
technology to make operations
streamlined, more cost-effective and
more flexible by basing it on standard
network IP infrastructure.
A specific broadcast environment
where high-performance IP-based
KVM has proven itself is in the gallery
control room. Here it can bring
much improved levels of flexibility,
scalability and comfort, through
various means.
Workstation Removal
Space constraints are a common
problem associated with broadcast
control rooms. Fortunately, one of the
biggest benefits of IP-based KVM is
that it allows the removal of physical

computers from the control room
into a separate external location
such as an access controlled server
room. Not only does this prevent
unauthorised usage - something
particularly pertinent in an age where
cyber security is a higher priority
than ever before, particularly within
the broadcast world - it also helps to
prolong the life of the machines by
keeping the computers at a certain
temperature.
Similarly, by removing the physical
machines from the control room and
placing them elsewhere, you are also
removing the additional heat and
noise that they typically generate
when in use. This improves the general
comfort and ergonomics of the control
room
environment,
maximising
the performance of the users and
operators.
Total Reliability
Be it working on a production,
playout or editing, one of the biggest
requirements in any broadcast room
is reliability. In a live broadcast control
room, the editor must be able to move
effortlessly between different camera
shots or computer systems in order
to create and manage the content.
Possible points of failure, such as
network, hardware cabling or power
also need to be mitigated.
High-performance IP-based KVM
provides this reliability. Operators
can switch from one camera shot or
application to the next, seamlessly and
instantly, at the touch of a button. This
makes it easy for production teams to
manage a workflow and operations
without the need for large numbers
of computers or workstations at their
desks.
To
help
management,
highperformance IP-based KVM can also
cope with multiple types of devices for
a seamless user experience offering
very high degrees of integration. In
the control room environment, touch
screens and multiple USB devices are
often incorporated into the system for
ease of use and to further eliminate

the keyboard and mouse.
Importantly, IP-based KVM
technology has the ability to
integrate and manage all of
these devices.
The Future
The typical broadcast
control room has already
transformed considerably in
a short space of time thanks
to high-performance IPbased KVM technology.
As the broadcast industry
continues
to
evolve,
KVM
technologies
will
also continue to deliver
flexibility to broadcasters.
Workspaces will become
more visual, with interactive tools
that provide a simple and intuitive
user experience. Specifically, highperformance IP-based KVM will play
a large part in helping broadcasters
realise this vision, allowing for
seamless and instantaneous switching
between each tool, application or
system without the need for multiple
workstations in the room itself.
We also cannot forget the continued

importance of safety, data security
and disaster recovery strategies. If
broadcasters can strike a balance
between maximising the performance
of their KVM solution and ensuring it
is continuously protected from both
internal and external security threats,
we will surely see broadcasters
continuing to thrive through control
rooms that reaffirm the industry's
reputation for innovation.

Adder Unveils Innovations

Adder Technology unveiled its latest
innovation at Integrated Systems
Europe in Amsterdam.
The existing Adder solutions on show
at ISE 2018 included the Adder CCSPRO8 command and control switch,
which allows operators to control up to
eight machines across eight (or more)
displays using just one mouse and
keyboard.
It is ideal for improving ergonomics
in a control setting where spacing or
layout is important and management
of multiple computers from one station
is required. The Adder CCS-PRO8 also

The AdderLink XDIP

features FreeFlow technology, which
enables users to move from one
display to the next simply by moving
the mouse across a screen border.
The new AdderLink XDIP was
also on display. Ideal for small to
medium-sized extension and matrix
installations, the solution uses existing
infrastructure to provide extension
and switching between different
computers. The AdderLink XDIP can
also be used in multiple configurations,
features intelligent EDID and a local
feed through port.
