ALTO
uses
Unlimited
Replication Security (URS) techniques
to provide user-selectable and
user-definable protection, minimal
recovery time, and disaster recovery
configurations. ALTO managed disks
can be removed for vault storage or
project transport. Each disk contains
full file system and whole unchunked
data files so data can be accessed on
any external computer with the right
security access. ALTO URS recovers the
system at a speed of ten minutes per
terabyte in the event of a disk failure.
Editshare's XStream EFS 40NL
data store is designed to deliver
the performance and economics of
traditional nearline storage with the
scalability, fault-tolerance, and easeof-use of the EditShare EFS shared
storage system. Administrators can
add one or more EFS 40NL nodes
of storage to an existing XStream
EFS cluster, as well as configure
the EFS 40NL as an independent
storage cluster for disaster recovery
or media backup purposes. Each
XStream EFS 40NL 4U storage node
provides 240TBs of capacity and, when
configured appropriately, can protect
against the loss of one or more nodes.
Facilis' Version 7.0 TerraBlock
shared storage system includes the
new Facilis hub server plus a new
browser-based web console which can
be used from any connected location.
Facilis will also be shipping 12GB SSD
systems that are claimed to be the
fastest shared storage systems in the
smallest form factor available. The

new Facilis web console increases
the efficiency of administrative
tasks. Facilis customers can access
dynamic bandwidth monitoring
and
server
performance
reporting in a unified GUI.
Facilis' FastTracker is designed
for cataloguing, searching and
viewing media types within Facilis
shared storage, including QuickTime,
MP4 and MXF codecs, along with DPX
and TARGA image sequences.
Harmonic's Spectrum X server
combines file, baseband and transport
stream ingest with integrated channel
delivery
capabilities,
including
graphics, DVE, and live switching of
baseband and compressed IP sources.
The Spectrum X supports a broad
range of SD and HD formats up to
1080p and is upgradeable to UHD.
Ortana's Cubix storage system can
be deployed in an on-site enterprise
server, in the Cloud or as a hybrid of
the two. It consists of 27 modules
which can be combined to match a
wide range of deployments such as
active accelerated archiving; disaster
recovery; archiving, indexing and
searching; business to consumer
communication; content preparation
and playout; content showcasing and
monetisation; corporate to corporate
communication; film scanning and
processing, ingest from the web and
social media, post-production, realtime tracking of content status across
multiple systems, robotic bulk tape
ingest; and transcoding, metadata
management and publishing.

digital assets to the Spectra BlackPearl
converged storage system. Pixit Media
used the Spectra S3 API in its Spectra
S3 client for PixStor and IBM Spectrum
Scale to allow transparent migration
and recall of data between files
and tape. BlackPearl clients use the
Spectra S3 protocol, an extension of
the commonly used S3 Cloud storage
interface.
Sony, in collaboration with IBM
Research, has developed a magnetic
tape storage technology with what is
claimed to be the industry's highest
recording density for tape storage
media in terms of area, at 201
gigabits per square inch. This is 20x
greater than conventional magnetic
tape storage media (9.6 gigabits per
square inch. The resulting technology
can support high-capacity storage
of approximately 330 terabytes per
data cartridge, whereas conventional
technology can only handle 15TBs per
data cartridge.
Spectra Logic has added a new midtier enterprise-grade data storage
offering to its BlackPearl family:
Spectra BlackPearl Network Attached
Storage (NAS). BlackPearl NAS scales
from 48TBs to 7.1PBs per unit.
Storage DNA's DNAfusion is based
on Sony's Optical Disc Archive (ODA)
media and StorageDNA's media
intelligent software. It provides a new
storage medium that is removable and
claimed to have a 50-year archiving
lifetime. Features include random
access, browsing, playing, subclipping, and transcoding.

EVO shared storage products are

now officially certified for use
with Telestream's Vantage video
transcoding and file-based workflow
automation.
Western Digital's G-Technology
G-Drive USB-C offers highcapacity storage with USB-C
connectivity for next-generation
PC and Apple Mac computers
while simultaneously charging
compatible USB-C devices like the
latest Apple MacBook and MacBook
Pro computers. It is available in
capacities of up to 10TBs.
XenData's SXL-8500 series LTO
archives are designed for large
scale video applications. The base
models have 420TBs of near-line LTO
capacity and scale to 3.3PBs by adding
library expansion modules. The fully
expanded SXL-8500 library capacity is
equivalent to over 70,000 hours of HD
video, recorded at 100 megabits per
second.

Looking Ahead
The long-term goal for data storage
is on solid-state devices at much higher densities than are achieved on currently available media. One approach
is to record data as magnetic reversals
in individual atoms. Another is to write
onto DNA strands. It is claimed that
over 200PBs of data can potentially
be stored in a single gram of DNA,
free from the long-term data fading
inherent in magnetic storage technology - so long as the DNA is kept in
cool and dry storage conditions. That
is an interesting limitation. Perhaps
it will always be the case that nothing
is ever safely stored unless held on at
least three devices, preferably at three
separate locations.
