Nogues sees DTT continuing to
grow, both through new networks and
upgrade/replacement work on existing
installations. "We can see a perfect
example in the US and its current
ATSC 3.0 transition," he says. "The
desire to go from analogue to digital
is there and the need for new products
for broadcasters is growing. We are
also seeing a number of demands for
upgrades of old equipment, but not
full-on replacements."
Nogues adds that Thomson is
working on a new range of highefficiency products right now.
Digital Radio Transition
There is more resistance to the
transition from analogue to digital in
radio, particularly from the listeners.
While some countries are forging
ahead with the switchover between
the two technologies, FM remains
the key transmission carrier in many
counties. Even Norway, which is aiming
to move the majority of broadcasters

and services on to DAB+ by the end of
this year, will retain FM for local and
community stations.
Analogue also remains strong in the
AM market, although Bruno Le Bruton,
Product Marketing Manager for Radio
at Thomson, reports more interest
in the digital replacement in this
frequency band, DRM (Digital Radio
Mondiale), particularly from India.
He adds that there is now renewed
interest in high-power medium wave
products after "a few years of low
activity".
Thomson recently updated its
range of radio transmitters to include
400kW to 2MW medium and long wave
devices.
FM analogue and DAB/DAB+ for
digital appear to be the main concerns
for radio transmitter manufacturers
right now. Christophe Poulain, Vice
President Of Sales And Marketing
for WorldCast Systems, anticipates
"a slowdown" of FM business in
approximately ten years but says today
it is still strong and will be supported
for several years in many countries.
"We will see more countries adopting
digital radio but those same countries

will continue using FM in
parallel, although Norway
is an exception in my
opinion," he says. "With this continued
use of FM, the renewal market is
driven by the higher efficiency of new
transmitters as well as their capability
to be managed and monitored
remotely. There are significant
savings to be made on power bills, so
the return on investment for service
providers is very short and therefore
replacement is an attractive option."
Poulain observes that new markets
are emerging due to frequency
allocations being made in African
and Asian countries, where private/
commercial radio is now only
beginning to establish itself.
WorldCast is aiming its Audemat
range at DAB/DAB+, as well as the
US HD Radio system. FM is targeted
with the Ecresco transmitters,
although a new company,
WorldCast Connect, has been
established to develop network
management
systems
for
broadcast to compensate for the
eventual decline in analogue business.

there has been a shift to digital in the
US, analogue broadcasting continues
in parallel due to HD Radio being
a hybrid system. "This is because

are migrating to DAB digital radio but,
globally, FM and AM radio are still
largely analogue."
Even with the drive to digital, all
this means that those familiar masts
