RTW Metering The Real-Time Analyzer

T

he Real Time Analyzer (RTA),
which is available for several
systems from RTW's TouchMonitor
series, shows the spectral distribution
of the frequency range based on
how the human ear senses the audio
signals. The human ear perceives
different frequencies, with the same
acoustic pressure, at different volume
levels. For this reason, users can select
different
standardised
weighting
filters in the configuration of the RTW
TouchMonitors, and these filters are
then used for audio analysis. The
most common filter is A-weighting.
In this, the system provides a quite
realistic picture of how the currently
metered audio sounds.
The RTA has a horizontal axis that
shows the frequency range. The
standard frequency range would
be from 20Hz to 20kHz, which is
the typical range that a human

ear can detect. However, if
you are only interested in the
low frequency range, you can
configure the axis to end at
5kHz, which provides a higher
resolution for this frequency
span. Almost all parts of the
human speech are covered
within this range. For special
applications, you can extend
the 20kHz frequency range
with the H band that shows summed
audio content higher than 20kHz. The

resolution of the RTA can be set to 1/3
octave, 1/6 octave or, with the latest
firmware release for TM7 and TM9,
to 1/12 octave.
The vertical axis shows the
resolution in dB, which has the
options for 3, 6 or 9dB as a
selection. In this way, users can
define the range of the displayed
audio signals. To add a reference
point to the display, a value between

-18dB and +21dB can be set in the
configuration menu.
In addition to the Real Time
Analyzer, RTW also offers a PPM/TPPM
instrument, a Vectorscope, a StereoCorrelator, or for Surround Sound, a
Multi-Correlator, as well as a Surround
Sound Analyzer (SSA).
Additionally, for loudness metering
according to various loudness
standards, loudness bars
or numerical values can be
added to the user interface
(e.g. for EBU128 momentary
loudness, short term loudness
and integrated loudness).
On top of that, the dynamic
of the programme can be
easily shown on the metering
devices, with the MAGIC
LRA (loudness range) instrument. A
special tool for displaying the various
loudness values over a certain time is
the Loudness Chart from RTW.
No matter the project, the Real Time
Analyzer from RTW's TouchMonitor
series will provide accurate frequency
distribution in an easy-to-read display
format. These tools allow broadcasters to worry less about audio metering
and spend more time creating programming content for the masses.
