MEL'S MUMBLES...A QUICK LOOK AT THE INDUSTRY
TRENDS THAT HAVE CAUGHT HER EYE

The Rise and Rise of VR
Melanie Johnson

We all know the consumer
market is driving virtual
reality (VR) technology. In
fact, it's driving it so hard
that Deloitte Global has
predicted that VR will hit
its first billion-dollar year in
2016, with the vast majority
of activity generating
the money coming from
consumer gaming.

By 2020, it looks like VR's
annual revenue is set to grow
to $30 billion according to
advisory firm Digi-Capital. As
the predicted figures show, there's
certainly an appetite for people
to immerse themselves in a 360°
virtual environment.
So with the consumer market
fully embracing VR to entertain
the masses and many people using
the technology on a regular basis,
how will businesses and education
adapt to make sure they benefit
from this new phenomenon too?
VR has already started to find

its home within many industries.
Automotive companies such as
Ford, Volvo and Hyundai are
using VR not only for the building
process, but also in sales. Training
healthcare professionals can
experience working on a body
before qualifying, tourist boards
are offering guided tours of historic
attractions, and retailers can show
off various clothing options before
customers buy without having
the items in store. Even architects
are designing buildings using VR
to experiment with the exterior
and interior of buildings, plus
homebuyers can view what their
new home will look like.
In education, VR has been
positioned as an ideal way of fully

engaging students in a particular
subject. History teachers will
be able to take their class on a
tour of historic London, to the
battlefields of the First World War
and around ancient landmarks to
learn about days gone by.
So with all its benefits, VR seems
to be the immersive technology
of choice. Although with the
technology's bulky, expensive and
restrictive headsets, is there an
alternative to VR that is more
comfortable for the user? Yes, there is.
At a recent show I visited in
London, there was lots of talk
around the commercial benefits
of augmented reality (AR). AR
enhances the user's current
perception of reality rather
than replacing the real world
with a simulated one. Computer
generated additions, whether
sound, video or graphics are
developed to change a person's
current view. Some feel AR
enhances reality by adding
commentary
or
additional

information
without
being
overwhelming. The success of
AR has already been cemented
by the recent phenomenon of
Pokémon Go.
The rapid adoption of both
VR and AR has created some
exciting opportunities for the
industry. For the pro AV market
it will only further extend already
profitable portfolios and shake up
the industry to offer something
different to businesses that want to
attract new talent and customers.
For the consumer, well, we'll be
able to experience a multitude
of new situations without having
to leave an environment we're
comfortable with.
VR and AR both have a great
future. It'll be exciting to see these
technologies grow and being used
in everyday life. I'm sure at every
industry show we attend various
companies will keep pushing the
boundaries to develop more uses for
VR and AR, and every time we'll be
amazed at how it can be used.

GUEST COLUMN - AIMS INITIATIVE SHOULD CALM IP CUSTOMERS' FEARS

Internet Protocol (IP).
This interoperability is
key to a successful IP
transition.

Michael Grotticelli,
Online Editor,
TheBroadcastBridge.com

The talk of the town at
most trade shows these
days is broadcasters'
eventual transition from
moving video signals over
a baseband SDI cable
to a smaller Ethernet
cable sending signals as
packets encoded in the

A number of solutions are
already on the market to help
media companies begin the
transition by introducing IP
components to an SDI workflow.
By moving to an IP infrastructure,
production
and
distribution
facilities have more flexibility in
how resources are allocated and
shared with its four walls as well as
to any point on the globe with an
IP connection.
Looking to calm customers' fears
about incompatible technology,
a group of companies that make
IP-centric equipment have joined

together to form the Alliance For IP
Media Solutions (AIMS), a group
of 54 (and counting) that have all
agreed to follow a well-laid out
roadmap that includes established
standards from organizations like
SMPTE (2022-5/6), AES (AES67),
AVS Forum, EBU, AMWA,
IABM, and others. Using industrywide standards makes sense
both for the customer (flexibility,
resolution independence, and
lower cost equipment) and for the
manufacturer (which can now
make exactly what the customer
needs).
AIMS proponents say their
initiative is different from
previous attempts at producing
a universal standard for moving

video (remember MXF?) around
a fully networked facility. This
time it's different because there's
a strong will among customers to
streamline their multi-platform
workflows and make them more
manageable with a small staff.
Only with a commitment to
open standards will customers
feel confident enough to invest
in new infrastructure necessary
to move audio, video and data
signals-both locally and across
the globe-as IP packets.

Argument for Open IP Standards
in the Media Industry".
