K5600's Alpha 800 Plus was first
presented in prototype form at last
year's IBC, and this year hits the show
in full production stride. Featuring
a Fresnel lens of 175mm, the "Plus"
component of its name comes from
the ability of equipping the light with
a par reflector: a K5600 G22 socket 90
degree allowing users to quickly move
the lamp from a vertical position to
horizontal, and thus convert a Fresnel
into a par for use with lenses or a
softube.
The Kinoflo Diva-Lite LED 20 & 30
DMX has been making waves ever
since it was first released, and the
company now confirms it will ship
in October. Tuneable from 2700K
to 6500K, with green/magenta
correction and wireless DMX, Kinoflo
claims that the 'lustrous' white light it
produces doesn't flicker or shift colour
temperature when dimmed. It can also
be operated wirelessly, with the use
of a Lumen Radio transmitter as an
alternative to DMX cables, while hues
can be balanced to other lights on the
set and tuned to match the spectral
curves of professional digital cameras.
Litepanels' latest Astra 1x1 Soft BiColor Panel is billed as an alternative
to the company's original 1x1 Bi-Color
LED and has been designed to mimic a
softbox in a compact, portable design.
The panel features a high CRI that
yields good colour reproduction and
precise colour temperature, while
it can also adjust between daylight
and tungsten to accommodate
most lighting situations. It supports
smooth transitional dimming with no
noticeable colour shift and flickerfree performance at any frame rate
or shutter angle. In many ways it is a

bit of a poster boy or girl for progress
in LED lighting, offering a light output
that is four times higher than the
original 1x1 fixtures.
Photon Beard's highlight at IBC
is, well, The Highlight, which it claims
features outstanding colour rendering
and television lighting consistency
indexes in 3200K and 5600K colour
temperature variants. The passively
cooled units are available in 90, 180,
270 and 360W variants: the company
stating that the Highlight LEDs
relate directly to 2, 4, 6, and 8 tube
fluorescents, but deliver far more
'punch' and none of the unnatural skin
tones that LED fixtures can produce.
Rosco's Pica Cube, as the name
suggests, delivers a fairly impressive
amount of light from a 2.5in housing.
There are three models, headed by
the Pica Cube WNC which throws out
more than 1005 lumens using a mix of
high CRI warm, neutral, and cool LED
emitters, giving it a range from 2800K
to 6500K. It's also available in 3W
(warm LED emitters) and 3N (neutral
LED emitters) fixed colour temperature
models.
Kickstarter gave birth to the
Softpanels LED lights earlier this
year, and the good news is that
they will start shipping hopefully by
mid-September. These have caused
something of a fuss during the course
of the year, with their colour meter
built into the body of every light.
The idea is that using proprietary
'Autocolor' matching technology, the
lights can instantly read the current
ambient colour conditions, and then
exactly colour-balance their output
to suit. The units come in 3x4ft
(90x120cm), 2x3ft (60x90cm),
