Broadcast Picture Monitors

ost-production
houses
and
playout centres have long been
happy to use consumer TV displays for
routine monitoring, often combined
with a multiplexer allowing several
sources to be eyeballed on a single
screen. Many of the specialist monitor
manufacturers have responded by
adding features such as waveform and
vector display. The ability to capture
stills or full motion video to plug-in
memory is also becoming increasingly
common.
Other developments emerging in this
product sector are the introduction of
4K monitors and the gradual addition
of high dynamic range capability. No
sign yet of a commercially-available
8K monitor, though Samsung is
understood to be planning an 11K
mobile phone display (2250 pixels per
inch) which could make an excellent
camera viewfinder and possibly a
respectable virtual-reality viewer.
Whether Samsung will be satisfied to
stop at 11K is another matter.
So what's new in monitors during the
run-up to IBC2016?
Atomos has introduced a 7-inch
screen 'recording monitor', the Ninja 7,
with the ability to capture and play 4K
via an HDMI input/output. Resolution
is 1920 x 1200 pixels and brightness
is 1,500 candela/m². AtomOS7.1 for
Flame accommodates SMPTE ST-2084
extended dynamic range input and
output.
Blackmagic Design's SmartView
4K is claimed to be the world's first
full resolution rack-mountable UHD
broadcast monitor with 12G-SDI for
native display of up to 2160p60.
It also accommodates SD
and HD-SDI sources.
Atomos Ninja 7
4K via HDMI

Built in 3D lookup tables, H/V delay,
blue only, zoom, focus peaking and
customisable frame markers can be
controlled from the front panel or
via IP. SmartView 4K includes two
multi-rate 12G-SDI inputs. A SMPTE
compatible optical fibre SDI socket is
also provided.

Boland BVB25 - 25-inch OLED monitor

Boland's BVB25 is a 25-inch OLED
monitor with 3G/HD/SD SDI and HDMI/
DVI inputs/outputs. Features include
SDI waveform and vectorscope,
adjustable safe area frame marker, 16
channel audio level meter and support
for 10-bit 3D LUT.
Bon
Electronics'
TXM-243T3G
OLED monitor includes 12-bit signal
processing, adjustable gamma (1.0 to
3.0), tally display, genlock and 8/16
channel audio level metering.
Dolby's PRM-4220 monitor displays
DCI P3, all high-definition formats over
HD-SDI, and 2K video content. It uses
3D LUTs to emulate the gamut and
contrast ratio of film, as well as the
colour profile of digital cameras.
Eizo's CG2420 is intended for use
in post-production. It has a selfcalibration sensor and comes with
ColorNavigator 6 software which
allows users to set their own target
values for brightness, gamma, and
white point. The panel is claimed
to cover 98% of the DCI-P3 colour
space used in post-production.
Flanders
Scientific's
BoxIO
utility is now also available as a
free download for Apple Mac and
Microsoft Windows PCs. Operators
can load 1D and 3D LUTs, control
mode and input settings, set network
preferences, and capture full
resolution reference stills with or
without LUT applied. Reference
stills can be saved as full resolution
jpg or bmp files.

Blackmagic Design SmartView 4K/UHD

Ikan offers a line of 4K-compatible
on-camera monitors: the VL35, the
DH5e, and the VXF7, range from 3.5
to 7-inches. With a 3.5-inch screen, the
VL35 pairs with the Blackmagic Design
Micro Cinema camera, GoPro, or with
gimbals. The VXF7 7-inch monitor is
the latest update to the VX series.
It has a 1920 x 1200 pixel panel, 4K
support, and an SDI to HDMI converter.
It also has 3G-SDI, component,
composite, and HDMI inputs and
outputs.

Ikegami's HQLM-3120W 4K master
reference monitor

Ikegami Electronics Europe will
introduce the HQLM-3120W at IBC2016.
Designed for use as a full 4K master
reference monitor in television
production studios, post-production
suites, master control rooms and
playout centres, the HQLM-3120W
employs 31.1-inch pixel LED-backlit
LCD panel with full 4096 x 2190
resolution and 10-bit processing depth.
This has a wide viewing angle allowing
critical content evaluation within
horizontal or vertical viewing angles of
up to 178 degrees. Other performance
parameters include high contrast
ratio (1450:1) and a wide colour
gamut meeting the ITU-R BT.2020
standard specified for broadcast
quality programme production and
international programme distribution.
High dynamic range image display will
be available as an option. A 4K signal
source can be connected to the HQLM3120W via four 3G-SDI inputs (square
division or two-sample interleave).
Also provided are 12G-SDI 4K inputs

plus a 3G/HD-SDI input and an HDMI
input. A USB port and mini-jack stereo
headphone output are located on the
front panel. In addition to its picture
monitoring capabilities, the HQLM3120W is equipped to operate as a
waveform monitor and vectorscope.
It can also display vertical-interval
timecode,
eight
channel
SDIembedded audio level and closed
caption subtitles.
JVC's DT-N17F 17.3-inch studio LCD
monitor is compatible with ITU-709
standard colour space for HDTV
broadcasting. It supports up to 3G-SDI
(SMPTE 425M) including Level-A
and Level-B, which are capable of
transferring 1080p uncompressed 60
frames per second video data at 3Gb/s.
2K-SDI (2048x1080p) is also supported
to downsample to full HD display.
Leader's 5333 is a combined picture
and signal monitor designed for
deployment in studios, technical areas
or attached to a video camera-support
tripod. Its 6.5-inch XGA TFT LCD
screen can be used to display video
signal waveform, vectorscope or the
video image. The levels of up to eight
SDI-embedded audio channels can be
monitored using bargraph meters. SDIembedded audio can be extracted and
two user-selectable audio channels
sent as AES/EBU to a BNC output.
Audio can also be monitored via the
headphone output. The LV5333 also
features a five-bar display that enables
simultaneous observation of digital
broadcasts and composite levels
