Looking To A Live Future
Far more of a punt, as it were, is
VR. It has been an astonishing couple
of months for the nascent format, with
most major broadcasters and sports
properties conducting trials in the
format since a Harmonic, ViaccessOrca and TF1 team first captured a live
sports event (France beating Russia in
a Euro 2016 warm-up) in 360-degree
video at the end of March. OBS'
decision to show one key event a day
in the format from Rio 2016 underlines
its progress, and also the speed with
which new IP-centric solutions can be
deployed.
Indeed, it's interesting to note
how little of an 'in-house' broadcast
innovation this is, the camera deployed
for UEFA's Euro 2016 VR tests being
the Nokia Ozo. None of the major
camera manufacturers have as yet
made inroads into the VR space.
Again, there is a new editorial
language to learn. Four rigs are being
deployed at each Olympic event, the
idea being to see how variables such
as pitch size, game speed and the like
influence the viewer's experience.
Likewise, UEFA experimented with

camera positions, with the behind
the goal position and centre line
the favoured positions for on-pitch
coverage.
All this new technology is
somewhat overshadowing the role
of the specialised camera, but OBS
is promising a few interesting new
tweaks to the Olympic set-up, with
a record deployment of cable cams
being joined by drones for events such
as kayaking and POV action cams, both
mounted on equipment and being
worn by athletes.
OTT Challenge
Probably the biggest step change
with the Games this summer though
will be online. If London 2012 was the
first digital Olympics, by the time we
got to Sochi 2014 the amount of online
content was exceeding linear TV by
around 25%, and that is a figure only
set to get larger.
Rio 2016 is effectively the first
genuinely multi-platform Olympics
and the one confident prediction that
anyone can make is that it will break
all online records. The latest BBC data

cont'd...

from Euro 2016 is an interesting smallscale indicator of the trend: 2.3 million
people watched one home nations
game online in the group stage, more
than double the previous record, while
there were also 14.6 million unique
visits to the BBC Sport website in one
day, again breaking records. And if
that seems a lot, consider that London
2012 garnered 8.5 billion page views
and 1.5 billion video views from 621
million unique visitors four years ago,
while it also delivered 376.5 million
video views to mobile devices.
As the phrase goes though, you
ain't seen nothing yet. One influential
survey suggests that up to 85% of
Olympic viewers are liable to use a
second screen while watching the
Games, and OBS has sharpened up its
Olympic Video Player to provide rights
holders access to enhanced content
and data as a result. And, when an
event the size of the Olympics has an
audience measured in billions (3.6
billion claimed for London 2012 to be
exact), in sporting parlance, expect to
see those figures knocked out of the
park this summer.

Nokia's Ozo 360-degree camera was used
by UEFA in Euro 2016 tests

There are qualifiers though. As
well as a multitude of political and
economic crises afflicting the country,
there is also disquiet about Brazil's
internet preparedness. It stood up
to the traffic during FIFA 2014, but
demand is going to be significantly
higher this time round. Indeed, data
from Akamai suggests that Rio 2014
was responsible for seven times the
data traffic of South Africa 2010,
peaking at a high point of 6.9Tbps.
Given the growth in internet video
since then, coupled with the fact
that many events will be occurring at
peak time in the massive US market,
fulfilling all the data demands will be
a significant challenge at both the
national and the international level.

UEFA Selects Gearhouse To
Deliver TOCs At EURO 2016

U

EFA
selected
Gearhouse
Broadcast to deliver their
Technical Operations Centres (TOCs)
and Cable Interconnection Room
(CIR) as part of their comprehensive
installation at each of the ten EURO
2016 venues located in Paris, SaintDenis, Bordeaux, Lens, Lille, Lyon,
Marseille, Nice, Saint-Etienne and
Toulouse.
Gearhouse broadcast also provided
special camera facilities and
EVS slow-motion operations
facility at each venue.
At each TOC, Gearhouse
Broadcast installed around
100km
of
high
quality
fibre cable. Each TOC was
responsible for distribution of
the live stadium - or 'world'
- feed from each venue to the
IBC for worldwide distribution.
The venue TOC also passed
the feed to the nearby CIR

where it was distributed direct to
UEFA broadcast partners with an onvenue unilateral presence. The CIR is
a cable interface hub, which acted as
the central demarcation point at each
venue.
The stadium special cameras facility
was responsible for receiving feeds
from the UEFA helicopter camera,
in-goal cameras, handheld radio
frequency cameras and the stadium

A UEFA Technical Operations Centre

'beauty' shots located high
above each stadium.
These feeds were racked
and then distributed to
UEFA's
multilateral
and
FANtertainment
outside
broadcast OB vans. The

space also supplied all of the racks and
monitoring for the on-site EVS replay
area that houses all of the XT servers
used for the live production.
UEFA EURO 2016 was located in
France and featured 24 of Europe's
leading international football teams.
