Intercom Systems
& Talkbacks
Contributing Editor David Kirk rounds up
some of the latest technology for broadcast
intercoms and talkback solutions...

I

ntercoms and talkbacks are among
the most essential elements of the
entire broadcast production chain,
both for television and radio. The
following summary describes the latest
offerings from all major manufacturers
known to be active in this area, up to
and including the April 2016 NAB Show.
Audio Ltd's 1010 digital wireless
microphone system allows up to 20
systems to be operated together.
Transmitter and receiver have OLED
menu driven select-and-click displays.
Brightness can be reduced or the
screens and LEDs switched off entirely.
A free downloadable app will control
the main functions on the transmitter
from an Apple iPhone or iPad as well
as monitoring battery levels. The units
have black anodised cases machined
from solid aluminium with rounded
corners and recessed buttons on
the TX1010 transmitter. The DX1010
receiver has a pivoting OLED display.
Measuring 83 x 64 x 18 mm, the
TX1010 transmitter can operate at 5,
20 or 50 milliwatts power level and is
driven by two 1.5V LR6 AA cells housed
in a hinged lockable compartment.
A built-in SD card reader can be used
to update the system's firmware and
capture the live audio stream.
Broadcast Bionics XScreen is
designed to augment Telos multi-line
phone systems and VSets supporting
the company's VX, HX6 and iQ6
intercoms. XScreen software provides
call control, call screening, data
capture and chat features, allowing
an operator to answer, screen and
route calls across multiple PC clients.
A cloud-based database keeps a log
of calls and provides further alert

Glensounds'
Expedition portable broadcasters' phone

and directory capabilities. XScreen
can record and manage caller audio
(Livewire systems only). It can also
act as a soft phone for talking to and
screening callers directly through
a USB headset or sound card on an
XScreen client PC.
Clear-Com introduced the DX410
two-channel 2.4 GHz digital wireless
intercom at NAB 2016. Each BS410
base station can support up to 15
registered BP410 wireless belt packs
and/or WH410 wireless headsets.
In a single-channel operation, any
four belt pack users can engage
in simultaneous full-duplex (talk/
listen) communication, and three
users can communicate in full-duplex
dual-channel operation. The DX410
also features two-wire and four-wire
bridging and two-wire auto-nulling.
The bridging capability allows the
option of combining the two-wire and
four-wire ports together on channel A
or B, allowing operators to use a fourwire output to send all the audio to a
mixer, matrix intercom or other audio
source. The DX410 has frequency
hopping and adaptive frequency
hopping modes to avoid interference
with Wi-Fi. Operating in the 2.4 GHz
band, the DX410 does not require
radio licensing.
CTP Systems' Talkback24 is a 24 x
24 matrix four-wire talkback system.
It is PC programmable and can support
any combination of talkback panels
and four wires, up to a maximum of
24. The Talkback24 can be used in
conjunction with CTP's CT600 camera
talkback switcher to take the port
count up to 30. All panels include
a volume control for each key. The
Talkback24 is fully programmable via
its Microsoft Windows interface. All
sources and destinations for panel
keys and volume controls can be set
up as required. Individual keys and
volume controls can be grouped to
talk and listen to specific source/
destinations. Ports can be named and
will be displayed on panels supporting
labels. Eight dim groups are supported

Delecs' scalable intercom system

for multiple panel dimming. Ports
can be forced open to selected
destinations for generating open
production talkback.
Delec's Oratis intercom system
can be scaled from eight ports to
more than 4,000 ports, all accessible
simultaneously, by adding more
matrix cards. Each matrix card acts as
a self-contained independent audio
router. Small installations based on
a single matrix frame can fulfil the
communications requirements for a
theatre application. Larger system
installations, capable of serving the
communication needs of an entire
broadcast facility, are built using
multiple networked matrix frames.
Glensound's Expedition is a
portable
broadcasters'
phone
compatible with 3G UMTS and 4G
LTE networks. It also offers normal
narrow-band connections on 2G, 3G
and 4G networks. The Expedition has
two microphone/line/48 volt inputs
that are separately switched, and
two 6.35mm headphone outputs.
Two commentators can take the
unit to a field event and operate
as a commentary team. A reporter
can give an interviewee a dedicated
microphone and headphones. A
small ENG crew can have off air / IFB
with monitoring for the talent and
cameraman. The Expedition has a top
panel screen allowing easy dialling,
caller ID display, signal strength
metering, and configuration.
Green-GO produces an Ethernetbased based digital intercom allowing
an unlimited number of users to talk
to single or multiple listeners. Devices
available include a two-channel
belt pack, two-channel wall speaker
station, multi-channel station, dual
four-wire interface and dual two-wire
interface. Configuration is via supplied
software for PC and Apple OS-X
platforms.
Lectrosonics
has
introduced the latest
version of its Wireless
Designer Software.

Along with minor enhancements and
workflow streamlining, this now allows
frequency list import and the creation
of custom frequencies. HTML files
from Professional Wireless Systems'
Intermod Analysis System software
can be imported with detailed
frequency coordination information.
Wireless Designer includes a spectrum
scanner and coordination package.
The receiver can be tuned across
available bands. Data from the scan,
along with any custom frequency data,
can then be incorporated into the
frequency calculations.

Pliant Technologies' CrewCom
wireless intercoms are available
for use in 2.4 GHz and (where legal)
900MHz bands. A proprietary network
called CrewNet coordinates and
transports all system timing, audio,
signalling, and controls. CrewNet is
capable of operating over standard
Cat-5e (or greater) and/or single mode
fibre lines. CrewWare soft-ware allows
offline configuration, online control
and real-time monitoring of all system
components.
Riedel
Communications
has
introduced the ESP-2324 Expansion
for the company's RSP-2318 user
interface. It provides an additional 24
keys and four high-resolution colour
displays. The combination of the RSPPliant
Technologies'
