Virtualising In The Cloud
The move to generic computing and networking resources concentrated the minds of content
providers, network operators and key vendors at NAB where developments in virtualised
infrastructure abounded, writes Contributing Editor Adrian Pennington...

"

The Cloud will change the process
of creation," according to Google
President of Global Partnerships Daniel
Alegre in a closing NAB keynote. He was
referring principally to animation, by
giving cheaper access to computation,
but his remark is applicable to no
end of traditional media workflows.
InBroadcast profiles some of them.
Post-Production
The use of internet-based protocols
and standard compute systems poses
a problem for legacy broadcast
technology brands which are having
to rework entire product lines from
bespoke hardware to software.
"2015 was the worst year in the
market I've ever experienced in this
industry," SAM CEO Tim Thorsteinson
declared at the company's press
event. "Customers are driving us
to be interoperable. Adoption of IP
technology is new and there's fear
around that."
Nonetheless, Thorsteinson said his

SAM Go! offers remote production

company is prepared. SAM released
Go!, a solution for remote editing
news and sports over the internet.
Live media can be viewed even as
it is being ingest, and relevant clips
grabbed to build a rough EDL on their
device. Adaptive streaming enables
editors to view video on Wi-Fi, 3G or
4G connections right down to 400kb/s
to start creating stories as soon as
breaking news content begins to
arrive.
Avid has struggled to shake the
perception that it is more closed than
interoperable and will hope that an
alliance with rival Adobe puts the nails
in that.
"The industry is littered with siloed,
disconnected products that haven't
changed," said Avid Chief Executive
Louis Hernandez Jr. "We're the most
open, extensible company here."

Avid's collaboration with Adobe
means that users of Avid's work share
platform MediaCentral Platform can
access material built within Adobe
Premiere.
"We realised these great heritage
tools needed to change," explained
Hernandez who has been reworking
Avid's strategy since taking over the
reins two years ago. "It meant making
them simpler, ubiquitous and exposing
everything so clients had a choice
how to use them and with whom.
We took our standalone applications
and put them on Avid Media Central
where they could be shared. Now we
have a record number of third party
apps indexed on a common operating
system. This is the direction that things
are going."
Avid has seen a 400 percent increase
in Cloud subscriptions, mostly from
new customers, Hernandez revealed.
"I have a bias towards including the
community," he noted. "The notion
that you would be limited by your own
ideas and by a vendor's profit
margin is beyond frustrating
to someone like me who is an
entrepreneur who wants to
create technology."
Avid is replacing its Isis range
of shared storage products with
Nexis, a software-defined system
that uses off-the-shelf hardware.
These range from Nexis E4 for medium
to large post facilities to Nexis Pro,
targeting small post firms.
"In the IT industry hardware
storage has been commoditised to
the point where the use of off-theshelf components and the concept
of software-defined storage is not
uncommon - but it is [rare] in the
media world," added Avid Senior
Director, Product Management David
Colantuoni.
The use of commodity hardware
means Avid will be able to price
its shared storage offering more
competitively and target a wider
section of the media market,
Colantuoni said.
Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, Sony,
Grass Valley and Blackmagic Design
are all certified to use the product.
"Users don't need separate pools

of storage - they can run
products from all of those
vendors on this platform and
interact with them as they
need," added Colantuoni.
SaaS
post-production
provider
Forbidden
is
introducing a virtual ingest
server. Until recently if you
wanted to work with its Cloud
edit platform Forscene, you had to
have a physical server, which would
tap into storage, and perform the
ingest and transcode to Forbidden's
proprietary proxy format to put it into
the Cloud. That meant, especially for
smaller companies, a big cost of entry
to use the system. It also restricted
its use by camera operators out in the
field, who didn't want to be carting
a computer around just to upload
proxies.
"Now we can run our ingest software
inside a virtual machine on the
customer's own hardware," explains
Neil Roberts, head of R&D. "That
can be a server or a computer they
already have, or it can be a laptop
out in the field. It's very easy to scale
up and down. We can run virtual
servers directly in Microsoft Azure
or in Amazon. We can tap into an IP
stream in the Cloud and run our ingest
software and deliver the proxy of that
stream to the editors as a growing file,
about 15 to 20 seconds behind live."
This software-only solution to
uploading media into the Forscene
Cloud is currently in beta and
planned for release later this year.
The development follows the recent
addition of Forscene's Edge Server
to the Microsoft Azure Marketplace
and provides a further alternative to
traditional hardware-based ingest
workflows.
According to Forbidden's Director of
Business Development, Jason Cowan,
removing the need for hardware to
transcode and upload media proxies
to the Forscene Cloud provides a range
of benefits including no need for client
investment in fixed assets in order to
use Forscene on a project the ability to
scale up or down since multiple virtual
machines can run on a single piece of
hardware.

Forscene - collaborate in the edit

Before we leave this area, it's
worth noting that Sony is developing
a wireless workflow for its popular
newsgathering camera format XDCAM.
XDCAM Air uses 4G/LTE networks for
media delivery. It's a Cloud-based
ENG service that integrates existing
Sony wireless solutions and adds new
features such as a mobile application,
live streaming edit integration with
NLEs and enhanced remote control
capabilities.
Remote Interoperability
BPNet is a forthcoming browserbased IP workflow management
system for Broadcast Pix switchers
Flint, Granite, Mica, and Roadie. It is
intended to give production control
using traditional and custom software
switcher panels connected locally or
remotely via IP. It also provides access
to a BPView multiviewer, and direct
control of IP cameras, decks, and other
devices.
Among its features is ability to
accelerate uploading to Cloud storage,
secured collaborative work sharing,
an automated transcoding engine and
access to and entry of metadata.
With support for common IP
workflows enabled by Aspen, Sony
NDI, SMPTE 2022-6, and RTSP, it will
accommodate operation with third
party systems.
It will be pre-installed in all new
Broadcast Pix switchers from this
summer 2016 and as a free upgrade
for Broadcast Pix customers. The
service includes 25Gb of Cloud storage.
Broadcast Pix developed the system
with Danish firm ioGates and has
subsequently acquired the company.
"ioGates gives Broadcast Pix a
proven platform in the Cloud," said
Broadcast Pix Chief, Kevin Prince.
