t this year's IBC, L-S-B

showcased pioneering solutions
for IP routing and control using the
VSM system.
As IP infrastructure becomes
more prevalent in production and
distribution in the broadcasting
industry the changes to production
units - whether studio, Master
Control Room or Outside Broadcast
van - in terms of the way they look
and how they operate will be massive.
The IP technology suspends the
previous direct connection between
signals and the infrastructure, and
increases flexibility in terms of
workﬂows, the hardware used and
complexity of broadcasting facilities.
With its technology L-S-B offers
customers a secure solution and
strategy to master this transition
to an IP based broadcasting
world and to safeguard past and
future investment.

Comprehensive Control

Thanks to the VSM system
the comprehensive control of
broadcasting facilities is already a
reality, irrespective of the hardware
employed. Furthermore, the VSM
system now has an added IP
functionality enabling connection
to the VSM system in IP-based
networks, in a similar way to

L-S-B's VSM simpliﬁes production setups

integrating a router.
The VSM controls IP networks
and signals through the direct
connection and control of media
converters, such as the Lawo
V_Link4. The new VSM IP routing
functionality ensures that the signals
are routed within the IP-network.

Live Demonstration
Visitors saw a live demonstration
of how signals are controlled and
routed within the IP network on

a demo-wall on the L-S-B stand.
Multiple Lawo V_Link4 connections
with the VSM were used to show
functionalities including multiviewer
switchovers and signal switching
within IP networks.
In the future it is envisaged that
the VSM system will have even
greater functionality, enabling
customers to keep the workﬂows
they have used up to now and
implement them easily in a new IP
based infrastructure.

Sony ODA Managed By XenData At N1 Dnevnik
A

s an exclusive CNN afﬁliate for
Belgrade, Sarajevo and Zagreb,
N1 Dnevnik offers a 24-hour news
service for its viewers.
The company's focus on
newsgathering and broadcast
operations across three ofﬁces make
it unique, which is why N1 needed
the highest professional standards
for their equipment and an archiving
solution to match. N1 turned to a
Sony Optical Disc Archive (ODA)
library system managed by XenData.
The optical disc archive solution
consists of a Sony ODA PetaSite
library, model ODS-L30M plus an
expansion module, which currently
provides a 136TB capacity but may
be scaled to more than 800TB.
The Sony ODA cartridges provide
an extremely stable recording
medium with a 50-year archive
lifetime. The ODA library is managed
by a XenData SX-520 Series archive
server which presents the entire
contents of the library as one
large file system.

interface looks like a giant diskbased system with a standard ﬁlefolder structure. Files are written to
and restored from the archive by an

management system
which interfaces with the
XenData archive server.
N1 is now equipped
with a future-proofed,
scalable archive solution
to retrieve media at any
time for future use, and
will no longer have to
depend on video tape
archives that provide
little assurance of
meeting long-term
archive needs.
"Speed of access was
vital," says Igor Jovic,
Chief Technical Director
at N1. "Our production
teams are revisiting
older news recordings
from the deep archive
for a lot of material to
supplement bulletins on a daily
basis. Restoring material from the
PetaSite Optical Disc Archive is not
only reliable, but it is fast, especially
for the small size video ﬁles which

we tend to produce.
"Each Optical Disc Archive disc can
carry thousands of small ﬁles as well
as full programmes, but the ability of
production teams to search, access
and retrieve particular content from
the Optical Disc Archive efﬁciently
was very important. It means that
we can incorporate the archive as
a living part of daily production and
maximise it as a resource."
Jovic adds: "All of our journalists
now have the opportunity to see
where their ﬁles are and from any
workstation they can pull files
from the deep archive to central
storage for editing and straight to
air. The speed is incredible. Gone
are the two to three days waiting
for archived news material to be
restored. The Sony PetaSite archive
solution integrated with XenData
middleware is a proven and reliable
long-term archiving strategy."
